So everybody, including the guy in the article, just assumes that a helmet would have prevented the injury. I'm a little more skeptical. Helmets are great for protecting against road rash, offer some protection against slow-speed 90 degree impacts, and may worsen the effect of impacts at angles other than 90 degrees, which is most of them.
I think it's telling that helmet advocates typically resort to the the sort of emotional scare tactics you see in this article.
