ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

ASRA runs a number of racing events each year both big and small with a few more in the pipeline, however we are not Athletics Australia and we are not God, we do not receive 20mil each year in funding and the few people that run ASRA do it in our own time. To develop top level riders and encourage entry level racing experience we need to get a healthy racing scene happening as occurs in many parts of the world. This is not something that ASRA can do on its own and there is currently no place in the world where this occurs (a single association body actually organising rather than sanctioning multiple events). However there are many things that ASRA can provide to event organisers to encourage events. This could include; equipment, insurance, credibility, structure, advice, contacts, complicated computer scoring, risk management policies and all the other boring and complected shit that can discourage event organisers. What ASRA cannot do is all the heavy lifting

Over the last few years ASRA has acquired a number of assets they may be useful to event organisers.

Some of these things include:

2 way radios
Inverters
12volt 50ampH batteries
Rapid 12volt battery chargers
Impulse Timing system
Major event PA system
Track Video system (takes some serious expertise to use)
Cat5e and Cat6 cable upto 3kms (for timer or video or scoring display screen)
Small LCD screens
Slalom cones
Petrol Blower
Yard Brooms
Hi-Viz Vests
Bunting (that orange council fencing stuff you see)
Star pickets
Marquees
Banners
Haybale bags
Trestle tables

There are likely many other things that ASRA has that I can't think of off the top of my head.

The cost to event organisers of hiring or buying a lot of these things is significant and can be a discouragement to getting events off the ground. Some items like star pickets and bunting will only apply to major events but smaller things like 2way radios may also apply to smaller events.

The idea is to hire these to event organisers that are Association members of ASRA at no cost to encourage the running of events.

I haven't completely worked out the criteria for hiring these things but there will be no direct fee for this service although you will have to pay for the items to be shipped to and from the event. There may also be an age requirement (eg must be an adult or parent of a junior association member) This is to ensure that you have the capacity to replace or repair something that you damage.

ASRA also has a public liability insurance policy for racing events. We are able to offer this to you at a subsidised rate (between $500-$1000 depending on event type and cover required). You of course have to adhere to ASRA risk management guidelines to get this sanction.

This is not a discussion about whether certain types of events are good for the sport or not (comment or discussion along these lines will be deleted without notice), this is just an idea that ASRA thinks may help get smaller events off the ground and/or may help offset some costs of more major events. For equipment I will likely create an electronic booking form on the ASRA site.

Would this be of assistance to your event? Do you have some other good ideas on how ASRA could help?

cheers robbo. this will definitely help out event organisers, especially if its their first one.
i think the main problem for a first timer is not knowing where to start. but knowing that we've got this sort of support, it will make things much easier to get started and we'll hopefully soon see more and more events rolling around oz.
