Event Description

My name is Chris Byrnes and I'm a 15 year old student.

On the 10-13th January I will be doing a 165km sponsored skate around Melbourne to raise money for an expedition to Nepal with World Challenge next November.

World Challenge is all about working hard to improve life skills and giving back to those less fortunate as us. As part of this we will embark on a 4-week expedition to the Indian Himalayas. Whilst in Nepal, we will undertake a volunteer project to help with the construction of an orphanage. To undertake this trip, I need to raise a significant amount of money to pay for travel expenses, accommodation, medical support etc.

I have secured some generous sponsors including: Hopkin Skate, Street Sup, Skater HQ, Element/GSM Australia, Randal Trucks,  Nepean Physio Clinic, Alexander Motor Inn Essendon, Carmans and a few individual donations.

These companies sponsorship donations will greatly help me out. They are all fantastic and I highly recommend you take a look at what they offer. Websites bellow.

Carmans - http://www.carmanskitchen.com.au

Even though I have some willing sponsors, I am still short of my final goal and would very much appreciate any more financial help.

yeah it sounds like a sound plan man, i might come out for a roll with you, also when setting up a board i found that something LOW (like really low) with pump able trucks and at least 75mm wheels worked well, i would of liked 80's but my hotspots felt pretty damn good and are still a great wheel for downhill and nearly anything besides free riding and riding in skateparks best of luck man, i will hopefully come out and skate part of it with you

Hi Sean

Thanks for great advice yesterday. I'll certainly do as you suggest and get my board 100% before we leave.

I'm going to be in good shape because I've been on a training schedule for the last month or so doing 20 - 30kms most days.

We will be leaving Hampton probably about 10 or 11am on the 10th. We have planed to do it in 3 to 4 days because my dad (who is 57) is going to be riding with me, and although he will be cycling, his fitness level is not great. He thinks it's a good idea if we stop a bit to rest, eat etc... He calculated that if I'm averaging 10 - 12km/hour it will take that long and he doesn't want to do more than 4 - 5 hours a day. We are also locked into the dates a bit because the Alexander in Essendon have kindly donated the first night and we're staying with relations in Donvale on the second night. We we're planning to stay the third night in Seaford but are having trouble finding accommodation there so may have to get back to Hampton on the 3rd day.

Bernie because we are novices at this is we may do it quicker or slower depending on many factors (Dads fitness, weather, if the bike tracks are easy to navigate/find etc...) so it's probably a bit hard to schedule to meet up with other boarders even though we appreciate peoples kind offers to participate.

chris i would also say that the trip is doable in one day, two days max and thats skating at a very mellow pace, thats unless you plan on doing awareness stuff at each stop etc

Chris,

Hampton to Essendon....is a bit vague.

What paths are you going to use?

If you list your route in detail, you might get a bit more company.

What i did on the gear front was the day before it completely pull my board apart and clean every part then set it up again and when i say clean everything i mean i went through and lubed and cleaned every part that may need it including my pivot cup (i was running a gulwing 160 front a seismic 180 back) bearings, axles, all my nuts and bolts got a good clean and i put on a pretty much fresh set of seismic hotspots on. During the short breaks we where taking i gave my board a once over with a T tool and just made sure everything was locked in and tight and i did the same thing before starting, i would say 99% of this stuff only gives you a hand mentally and doesn't do anything on the performance front but skating a long way is mostly a mental thing. Your shoes will be fine just make sure they are comfy and your happy wearing them for a long time. The biggest challenge your going to face is going to be the mental side and not the fitness or gear side of things you need to be 100% committed to doing it what ever happens if you have that down pat its pretty hard to go wrong, Seb went over 200km on a hellcat with flatspotted wheels and i was really really really outta shape and still pushed 135 after working all day. When your going try and find incentives along the way, if you can smell good food just keep telling yourself that your going to go smash 20 quarter pounders as soon as you finish this and finally get some other guys to do it with you, i cant imagine how hard it would be to do even the small distance i did solo

Thanks Sean, what tips can you give me and what should I look out for? How regularly did you lubricate your bearings, if at all and how quickly do things wear out, like shoes?

chris i don't know how much i could contribute in terms of finances  BUT there are a few guys like myself, Seb, Brady Lane and Hamish who have covered serious distances before (brady and Seb have both gone over 200km in one stint and i have covered 135km in 12 hours) and could be useful when it comes to advise on covering distance as we have all done it before.

Well I can't determine the exact times for places because we haven't set any. We could leave later or earlier each day, depending on the weather and if we need to avoid the heat. However on the first day I will be skating from Hampton to Essendon, then from Essendon to Donvale, then from Donvale to Seaford and the last day will be Seaford to Hampton.

So Chris, tell us about where you are going to skate, and when you will be doing it, cause there might be some long boarders up to sharing part of the trip with you.
