I skate, oh and I like to wear high heels, does that make me a dumb bimbo? In no way do I find this distasteful, offensive or degrading.. I think I speak for many girls in saying that this picture is NOT offensive and it does not detract from the seriousness of the sport. It opens the gap to show that can girls skate too!
@bugs - if you find that this type of image reflects badly on the progression of skateboarding or that it would prohibit girls from getting into skateboarding, you can not be more wrong. As if one simple image like this would stop someone from becoming involved in the sport or from dating a skateboarder..
How is this image any different to seeing a hot guy with his shirt off sporting the latest board? Would you be offended to see that? Would you think, as man, you are being exploited for the sale of the board??
Girls like to see others girls in magazines, whether they are holding a skateboard or not.. It's called 'appreciation'
If you want to see a magazine filled with pictures of dirty sweaty blokes talking about how rad they are, buy another magazine.. The magazine is not just for guys, it's about promoting the stoke of skateboarding and yes there will be girls in it...and plenty more attention grabbing photo's!
An FYI, advertising has progressed in the last ten years, although it's people with an 'old school - play it safe, we don't want to rock the boat' mentality that stops the evolution of attention grabbing campaigns and provocative advertising.
So, here we are; goal achieved, everyone who made a comment, good or bad, has done exactly what Heelside wanted. You got involved, talked about it and in turn created free publicity for the mag and the board involved..
So if you don't mind, I'm about to step into my french made Christian Louboutin's and go for a skate...
best marketing campaign. wish my thread got this many hits.
I feel kind of responsible for Robbo putting up that photo. I would like to issue a general apology to the world at large for my part in unleashing that on you. I have no further argument about the original picture and the reasoning behind it or anything like that, I just want to die quietly and alone and a very long way from Robbo's daks.
sweet mercy.....
I think this REALLY SUCKS!
research tells us that self-esteem amongst girls is at its lowest ever - why do you think this might be?
why do you think ever increasing numbers of young women have breast implants and other surgery done so they can be 'hot', and are prepared to vomit up food to stay slim?
body image obsession is starting younger and younger, as girls are sent messages with images like this - about what it is to be a girl.
if you are a musician or sports woman, it is difficult to get on the cover of a magazine unless you are half dressed and looking 'hot''.
this image doesn't even have a head, she's just a decoration for your enjoyment, not even a person. is that what we are - decorations?
wearing high heels makes it hard to walk, let alone run, or skate, they hurt after a pretty short period of time – women and girls now wear them commonly for everyday activities, such as running to the bus stop and going to work all day.
but hey, them make our legs look 'hot' so you can enjoy them
what message do you want to send to teenage women?
get out and wear sneakers and skate, that's cool - or be doll like decorations for us?
