That's good for a simple concave. Check out my earlier photos... Puts about a 19mm concave and you can use more readily available ply. I used 2sheets of 1200 x 300 x 6mm ply and it's pretty sweet and stiff as!

Comment by Alexander on October 29, 2011 at 8:45: i was thinking of useing 4sheets of 3mm layers of hoop pine then fibre glassing the 2 outter layers. Not sure on what type of glue to use when doing this any suggestions? and can you get fibre glass from bunnings?

Premium Member Comment by Deeks63 on October 29, 2011 at 10:19: sounds good and should work fine. glass on both sides will give plenty of strength and very little flex on a deck at 12mmm thick all up. Yes you can get all the glassing needs at bunnings - down here they tend to only stock Diggers products (resin and glass) and it's a Polyester resin which isn't as strong and doesn't bond as well as epoxy - having said that, it's all i have used to date but about to move to epoxy for future boards. Bunnings (from what I've read) is a little on the high side for price so it never hurts to look around - they are just so convenient unfortuntely! I had started with basic aquadhere PVC glue but the best stuff to use is Titebond III and I've only been able to get that at Carbatec - the closest one to you is Brisbane I think.

Premium Member Comment by Deeks63 on October 29, 2011 at 10:32: yeah - just the Selleys brand stuff - pretty cheap and a good bond as long as you give it plenty of time to set (I usually waited 24 hours) - good stuff onthe surf board maker - hadn't thought of that - they will likely have the good stuff and give you the right advice on application.

Premium Member Comment by Deeks63 on November 2, 2011 at 14:13: If you're going with a rib press you could easily do all 4 layers at once. I had that thought when I first began, but the rib press I made did it easily. Just make sure you tighten it down evenly - get someone to help, and you will also find you don't have a great deal of time with the glue-up, particularly as you are using 4 layers, so a mate will help get all layers nicely coated and laid up ready. Let me know if you need any more hints and I'll email you some stuff.

It was a four day weekend in Melbourne so the new board got a good workout in the streets around home and two solid tryouts at a very deserted multi-level car park in the city... It's freakin awesom (if I do say so myself!) the drop and concave just locks you in instantly. Feels like your feet at glued to The deck. Totally impressed with the feel. Was able to loosen the kingpins off significantly and really carve out beyond my expectations. Going to make another and might go for a drop larger than 1" this time.
