uch more than ASRA, even tough I live in Oz.
Anyway, my best effort was a couple of months ago, Pottsville to the Southport Seaway, and back to Currumbin. I google earthed the path, 104k's over 10 hours (ish) with a couple of breaks. I wasn't too bad the next day, a little weeary but otherwise fine.
I pump, hardly ever push, on a Roe Mermaid, Bennett 5.0 front, 15 deg wedging, Seismic 105 rear, 7 deg de-wedged. I prefer relatively soft wheels, 75A avilas on the back, and 78A Gumballs on the front, mainly cos of all the "cthunk cthunk" expansion seams that bike tracks around here tend to have.
I had the thought a while back of trying to get some sort of Ultraskate happening over here. ie; skate a loop track or path as far as you can over 24 hours. Usually it is done to raise money for charity. I certainly think that there are enough longboarders around here (Byron, Goldy, Brissy) who may be interested?
I think thatthe Sydney Canberra trek sounds awesome, though I have no idea what kinda roads you guys are looking at. I guess that I like the idea of skating smooth paths a lot more.. but that is just my preference.…
Yeah I'm keen for either #2 or #4.Also, http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Corin+R... This leads to Corin Dam, and has runs going in both directions, it kind of goes over a mountain.http://www.cycle2max.com/bike-hill-climb/Corin-Road.aspx?id=187This also shows that they race road-bikes going up it, so it's GOTTA be hotmixed, there are also youtube vids of itOtherwise, lets go to Araluen! I've been there before, some mad turns on the way out there

hought i'd check if any skates we're going down but BAM, a bunch of clog hit me right in the face.
here's a sweet idea, if you are chatting to someone, do it on their page, lets try keep this thread clear for CANBERRA SKATE SESSIONS!
i don't even know who half of you guys are! less talk more skate!
if you want to get better at skating, get up to the pumpy, you'll froth, it can be fast or slow depending how you ride it, but it's a super sweet hill and it's SAFE!
skate trips are heaps of fun, and it doesn't cost much if you get a full car.
the only way you'll get better is by doing it, we have some sweet hills around here, but they're either gnar rough or too tech for beginners, get up to the pumpy so you can skate blacko!
sick one.
if you groms are keen and need a ride, i also have a car and can drive people up,
so save up 20 bucks and ask your parents and we'll do it!
SKATE TRIP!

's a typical mdf board/rib/threaded-rod press set up, currently ribs are set for a standard pintail board. (see attached pics)
Moving away in about 10 days time (from this post).
$30 all in (o.n.o.) plus i'll throw in a sheet of 4mm hoop pine (1200x600) which would be enough to make a little cruiser or slalom deck.
I'll even throw in a jigsaw and some clamps to help with cutting and making your board.
This needs to shift before i go, and i'd hate to see it go to the dump when i know it could start someone out on making their own decks.
I've no car, so it'll need to be pick-up only i'm afraid. I'm based in O'Connor area.
Give me a call if you'd like it Adrian 0414328238
don't miss out on kitting yourself up guys, and building your own is so much better :))
cheers,…
would recommend a dervish. Good for everything. if you weigh around 70, get a flex 1, so you can do downhill as well as keeping the flex. They are great for sliding as well. If not, try a never summer heist. about the same performance, less price. they are both awesome boards. also, seeing as your not doing too much insane speed boarding, they would be perfect.
Jago Aconley-Jones said:Shit man... You serious? damn.. I have had some fun on this board tho.. although, i havent ridden any other long board haha. Oh well man, what would you reccommend for a beginner/intermediate who lives in Canberra and would really only be doing suburban riding, and probably some downhill?
leighgriffiths said:before you get wheels, get a decent board. sorry to have to say that, but the fact is the Vault Dropdown is one of the worst boards on the market. They claim its a speedboard, but its anything but. flexy, narrow platform, positive wedging and to top it all off badly shaped/made. Unfortunately for you you have already wasted your wheel money on that thing, but let me tell you you won't regret spending the extra money on a good complete from anyone of the benefactors to the right of this page.

t day. Hope the weekend went well for the wigglers.
To quote Jacko's well written intro to this thread "and a few new secret spots that we have found recently which we will not disclose the location of as they are possibly some of the best hills around but could most definitely turn into some of the biggest hot spots for police."
The new hill is definitely in this category, so I'm hoping it can remain secret. Note also Pete Hill's comment regarding the difference in police action between NSW and Qld: pete hill said:yeah it used to be like that up here till various people got that wrong sort of attention well publicised.
Its not just police that are the problem, its more that inexperienced riders may go there as they think its the place to go. Then someone gets injured or even killed, and all of a sudden the heat is on for anyone going there. We may have been relatively lucky down here in that no-one has been killed that I know of or maybe in Qld they've just been unlucky, with 3 deaths that I'm aware of in the last few years. Either way, why risk stuffing up great places just to blab it on the net. The Goldy / Brisbane crew all work this way these days - they don't name their hills on the net. Anyway, I'll get off my sopabox now, there endeth the lecture!…

route would be minimalised by the fact that the only place where I see that being an issue is Surfers (Cavill Ave), which as you are only passing once every 22 k's would only be a handful of times, maybe more if you are going for a record ( Paul Kent, who most know from the Loaded "Long Treks" holds the current record of 250 miles/ 24 hours).
As far as wind goes, yes it can get a bit windy, but usually the wind is from one direction for a prolonged period of time on the coast, which means that if it is against you going one way then it is with you on the way back.
I have been told that any advertised event needs council permission, hence that is why most events on ASRA are outlaw! If this was to be a charity event then it would need to be organised, which means that I would need to get council permission, insurance, lots of legal advice, blah blah! I have no funds nor interest in that side of things so I am thinking that this is at most a protest, and at least a case of "I am going for a (Ultra)skate, who wants to join me". This also feeds into the safety aspect... if this is a protest skate or (just "turn up and skate"), then I would hope that we, as skaters, can be responsible for our own safety. If this is a protest, then I kinda want that to be the point.. that we can ride safely, day or night. So I guess, this brings the focus back to the original "Ultraskate for Skate Awareness" theme in the original post.
I just thought to check, and this does fall into the Queensland school holidays, which may increase the foot traffic obstacle factor. If we were to push it back a week, we would be out of that bracket and would also take advantage of the NSW public holiday (October 4th) for any southern riders.
So what do we think 24th - 25 Sep... school holidays - or a week later, 2-3 October to coincide with NSW long weekend? I am thinking more the latter, for the safety and enjoyment factors.
haggy said:24hours - that's intense. I'll see how I feel after the planned sydney-canberra skate. My body might simply not hold up! A 9km flat route. If you average 10km/h then you do the route roughly a total of 24 times.
How crowded do these paths get? It's one thing to skate amongst people when you're fresh, but after 12 hours having to dodge people and obstacles might get old. The last thing you want at a charity event is a collision.
Wind factor? being right on the beach is there a possibility of high wind?
Overall, I reckon it looks like a decent spot. Chance of exposure seems good. Being on the beach is good for media, camera shots, etc. Shouldn't be a problem getting on the local news.
And just to play devil's advocate: Publicity angle - are you mixing your messages if its a charity as well as a protest? What do you want the 6pm news to focus on. The charity or the protest? Or perhaps they will work side by side? Getting other skate disciplines involved is a good idea.
As already mentioned, will safety be an issue, particularly at night? Do drunk people hang about at night?
Do you need local council permits to run a charity event? I guess the charity could probably inform you about this.
Just a few thoughts from my end. Great initiative and hope to make it up for it. Again, will see how the body&funds hold up after the canberra skate.

out with a board you'll walk out with a hell of a lot more info than you'll get here. So take 3.5 hours on the bus (each way) and 2 hours walk (each way) it took me around 11 hours to get the hop shop. At the time there was nowhere in Canberra with anything other than a dervish to stand on (thankfully that changed) so I couldn't make any sort of informed choice. So if you really want to you can get there. Make time. Jacko said:
its not hard to make time to visit the shop. If your really after some advice, which it seems you are because your posting several questions, then theres no better place than go to the shop. You could lurk on the internet and wait for days for the proper answer, which you probably wont get a solid one as every man and his dog has an opinion over the internet...
doesnt matter how far you have to travel, because there are so many people that further than you to get there! people come far and wide to the Hopkin shop because that is where you will find the best gear, the best advice, and the best service you can possibly think of from a skate shop. Crew there can answer all your questions related to boards, helmets, shoes, gloves, wheels, anything you want or need...
So if you REALLY want a board, and want to know whats the best helmet, or the best shoes, put in the effort and get yourself to the shop. You wont regret it...
or you could lurk on the internet and not skate?

I would really really like to go, the thing is. I don't always have the time to go. Considering that it is actually quite far from my home. I have school (Mon - Friday)and on Saturdays and sundays, my parents are usually busy. I do have sisters but they are busy too. This is why i find it more convenient to get things from online. :(, although that isn't always good. The Dave said:
Fitz, this one seems legit. Trolling is generally easy to pick (groms aren't very subtle).
Justin, skate shoes are skate shoes. They all work. My only advice is to get high tops so you don't smash your ankle on the edges of the board learning to footbrake. I wear Globe Superflys and they are the shiznitt but Hopkin have a buch of equally rad shoes or if you're really strapped just go to Big W.
For your board needs, I'm just going to repeat the same advice. Jump in your car or on a train and head to Hopkin now. The internet will not help you here. Also, don't go to Skater HQ - great for blades, not for boards.
