ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hello,

I'm mainly posting because I have a question, but thought I may as well show my press and first test as well. Attached are images.

As I was just testing my press, I used cheap premium ply wood from bunnings and External PVA glue. Will eventually get tightbond III and source some decent wood. However, I would like to know, this premium pine stuff...it's no good, right?

besides, I made the board with the grain going the wrong way just because of the size of the pieces I bought. I was thinking of having my first go at fibreglassing with epoxy on it next. Putting a layer of fibreglass over each side.

Also, I'm going to cut this for drop through mounting, but with the large kicks i've designed I'm a little concerned about the structural integrity (lol). Think the kicks will snap? Mmm...

Anyways, this is my first shot at it, just experimenting.

Nice design by the way!  yes, grain the wrong way - this one may be too flexible to work...  The stuff i used to get from Bunings as "premium" was actually Marine Ply (a gaboon species possibly) in 4mm and 6mm thick sheets.  It was structurally pretty good and all marine ply is put together with waterproof glue.  Drop-thru will always create a point of weakness but if your deck is thick enough 10mm or more and you reinforce with fibreglass or such you should be right - only cut out what you need to for your base plate!  there's lots of templates on the net for this sort of thing.

Pine (pinus radiata) based ply's will always be pretty soft and mash easily when meeting a gutter at any speed - epoxy coating will help a little but it's not as structurally sound as others...

I would think you're more likely to snap at the "neck" (the cut outs) than where your drop-thru mount will be.

Ah, thanks for the advice. You so knowledgable and helpful <3

I wonder if fashioning some kind of kick protector would be cool or not. lol. often seen on the apex original boards.
The sheets I got were 3mm ply and I used 4 of them, so 12mm thick.

snapping at the neck rather than the drop through spot is something i didn't think of :O
