ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

Hey guys, My mate is currently developing an application for smart phones, its is starting out quite simple with just a hill gradient and length, but he is planning on it calculating times of runs, average speed, maximum speed, distance, and an aspect where you can compare runs, add you own runs.
It is still in early stages but he is going to need skaters with gps smart phones to test the app,

He is also looking for any ideas on what he could also add to the app

Looking forward to peoples response to this to see if it is wanted in the community :)

I for one wouldn't like my local runs posted on the net or in an ap!
Same, it's only an app for those who are to lazy to look for spots...

i understand where you guys are coming form and this is the reason we are looking for feedback. it is possible that we could code in a private mode where it can only be seen by people you have shared it with so you can keep those secret runs secret yet still be able to use the app in the way it was meant for

i can see it now poser cunts rocking up with penny boards and cruisers.

yeh i agree, some places need to be kept secret.. but its a good idea

Top notch ideas but make roads up. The other option you might have is having like the ''skatepark builder'' on tonyhawks games. That way you could have your local hill but it would only be on your memory card, not shared with the rest of the world.

after talking this over with my mate, we are thining of having a login system, the way we are thinking of doing this is get into contact with different skate crews and give them a username and password in which they can then distrubute to people they choose to, and within this login they will have there hill and data and will only be accessible by that login,

but this apps is made by longboarders for longboarders so we want to have the approval of some of the larger groups/better riders so we dont intrude on there secrets. we are willing to work with them with any ideas they have on how to combat these folks that wanna ruin runs for everyone by absolutly smashing the runs and make it a decent app for everyone

if i were to tell someone about my hill, i'll tell them about my hill... there is still no point in posting it up. the only reason you would have an ap like this is for those who are newbies, dont know spots, dont know people, and pretty much dont know how to skate. once again we are at square one, and would not want to share spots and get em blown out.... however if they were good enough and qualified for the 'login' or whatever you would do, there would still be no point of the ap, because they have been told about a spot personally or shown it when they are out skateboarding, not keyboarding

You could do it with IGSA race courses. Kozakov, Newtons, Kiera, Insul, Danger bay, Mary Hill. These are roads that people all over the world already know and kids dream of skating. People would probably be more keen to play on those roads to rather than joe blogs secret spot. One of the coolest things about first riding at Newtons was that you could drive the track before hand on a PS2 car racing game, it gave a completely different aspect of it and no other track can offer that feature. You might find people will use your app to decide if they want to race certain hills or attend certain events.

once again, i would not like just the average joe to be able to pick up a phone and say "oh look it says Mt Keira is a great place to skate i'll just grab my kook mates and go hit it all day every day!" and then have it shut down and the locals would never be allowed to skate it until the race is on, if they let it happen again...

I think that your mate might need some public liability insurance, and legal advice on "accept to use" disclaimers to include in the app, and if those disclaimers actually work for minors.

Because it loooks like it is being suggested as "a tool for Downhill skaters" the problem with such an app is not so much good skaters using it to improve their performance, but the novice skaters (minors) picking it up and saying "I can do that" when they simply cant, and the potential for a grieving parent's lawyers to join the dots between a tradgedy and the encouragement provided by your mate's app. Plantif lawyers will have a hard time making anything stick, but it could still cost plenty to defend.

The other problem problem with such an app is getting people to pay for it, when there are already apps that do an excellent job, such as MotionX, which does almost all that your are proposing. (check for copywrite infringement risk.)

It is also clear that not many here want the runs published.

I agree with Dani, a game like a Tony Hawk skater or the snow-board game based on the "official" race event tracks, and a few fantasy spots such as San Francisco could be a bit of fun.

You would probably also need a "traffic" mode in the game to increase the difficulty, and give you the excuse to add some gratutitous "splatter" graphics.

Everyone knows Kiera is a great place to skate already. There are hundreds of videos all over youtube of it. If you search Australian Downhill in Youtube that will be the first hill to pop up. It was also the most publicised Australian race ever held with thousands of spectators and if you are going to do that then you have to accept that people now know where this road is located. If you wanna keep a hill secret, don't hold a world cup race on it.

World cup race hills would really be the only safe option with a game like this as those spots have already been given away by the event organisers. These are also the roads that people dream of skating because it is the roads they see n all the videos. No one dreams of 7 pins (other than me) because no one knows that it exists. Where as people do dream of Mt. panorama because it is so heavily publicised and showcased.
