Usain Bolt set a new 100m world record yesterday: 9.58 sec. That's an average speed of 37.6km/h over the 100 metres.

He starts at 0km/h, and sprinters always slow down over the last 20 metres, so his top speed must be over 40km/h.

At what speed is it possible to run off a skateboard?

Hahah this is a classic, very interesting thread Bugs. I'm the worst at trying to do a run off on my skateboard, I would say nothing over about 15km/h for myself after that I will just give up and hope for the best.
I think the important point here is he starts at zero. Put this guy on a train and make him jump out onto the next stations platform while the train is in motion and we will see how he goes.

We are basically doing the same. We dont start at zero we start at 30 or 15 or whatever it happens to be. If you look at his shoe though I think you will find out his cheating ways. Big shoe = big steps.
I tried this 12 years ago when riding my skateboard home from school. I got to a speed where I thought I'm gonna die so I jumped off and ran. My legs couldn't keep up and my body got lower and lower to the ground befor rolling and ripping my school bag off my back along with half my shirt! If it ever happens again I'll probably just take a dive for a grass patch instead!
I ate it after running off a skateboard, on my first night of trying downhill, and thats probably why i switched to buttboard.

But I do remember seeing a guy do a run out at newtons after the slalom event, It was a champion effort as he was hauling.
haha dani plus in the pic above he has an extra joint in his right leg. combined with that huge shoe we may have cracked his winning formula. im doing intro genetics this semester and if i can manage to engineer some breed of super skater with this attribute then australia will have the advantage for push starts and foot breaking
and phill the emu run is never a good feeling when your upper body is going faster than your feet :(
I did a run off at 40km (unintentionally actually) and my arms were "flailing" around that much trying to help my legs keep up that I actually dislocated my shoulder.... my recomendation lower your body and ass or hand/knee slide
i think i can run off at high teens, low twenties. I'm not trying to brag or anything..because why the hell would you? I'd be interested in testing it though...in some way that doesn't involve me dying. maybe two treadmills running at the same speed next to each other, hold onto the rails of the first, let go and jump onto the second and see if you eat it or not
I'd like to see that!

so would I!...now...all we need is an unsuspecting victim...

What you would do is start on about 16km/h in a tuck on your skateboard on a treadmill then let go so your board flicks out from under your feet and have a little jump so your clear of your board and start running like Usain bolt.
wait...you wouldn't even need to do that, just stand on the side of the treadmill, spin it up to speed, jump onto it and sprint like crazy, as long as you're not holding the rails, it's the same as coming off a board right?
