from what I have read, proper urethane is very carcinogenic, and the polyurethane in skate wheels is not as bad. but for that matter, any dust / particulate matter that you breathe in is carcinogenic.
after recent chats with my boss I can not forsee myself taking lathing of wheels up again, so here are some tips.
due to the unsupported shape of a wheel, and the resilient nature of the thanes, the most effective way that I found to machine wheels down was to actually use emery to cut it.
I would wrap a piece of 40Grit emery around a piece of keysteel, with the key steel bolted into the lathes toolpost just use it like a regular lathe tool.
spindle speed any where between 1000 and 1200 RPM
the real key is how you mount the wheels on the lathe, if you dont mount them correctly you will never end up with a wheel that doesnt vibrate the shit out of your board.
I mounted my wheels on a mandrel that had a shoulder turned to the same size as a bearing, to me this is the most logical surface of the wheel to secure it against.
yo billy you want to lathe my grippins?
if you pay me 20 bucks
