4.3 Million for Umina Beach Recreation Area/ Super Park

Just announced...with funding to the tune of 4.3 million, is a super park for Umina Beach NSW..to include "junior and senior playgrounds, all ages fitness equpt, BBQs, tables, landscaping, cafe and (what got my ears pricked up) pathways/ cycleways and upgrade to the existing skatepark".

I have sent a few emails to councilors and committees stating

" In addition to the existing skatepark ugrade...I propose for the inclusion of some sort of 'track' surfaced with concrete or bitumen about 4 to 5 metres wide..100 to 200 meteres long with a slight to moderate incline in parts, flat in other parts and sutble mounds and banks in parts primarily for the purpose of longboard skateboarding, free ride and slalom skateboarding, types of skateboarding that are growing rapidly in popularity but mostly unsupported, as yet, in skatepark and urban recreation area design.."
"This could be included in the scope of 'cycleways and paths' to form part of a big network of various paths/cycleways linking the areas together..or be considered as a totally separate track. As well as skateboarding, the track could be suitable for scooters, rollerblades and kids bikes.. it could even be lengthened to provide for criterium racing (like Mt Stromlo, Canberra) short track triathlon (perfect location by the beach) and in line distance racing..at which regional competitions could be staged adding commercial benefit for the Peninsula and Gosford."

The response has been very positive, particulary from a few councillors and the lady who is president of the Peninsula Families Action Group..who have been instrumental in securing funding for the project in the first place and have asked if I could provide images ,diagrams or visuals of what I'm talking about...

If anyone has pics or internet links of low carving banks..moguls..or "pump mounds" (Shadows phrase) or any other ideas that could be included in a multi use slalom/skateboarding track..it'd be good to take to the next meeting on the 16 June..(public meeting so anyones free to attend and put their ideas forward.

Who knows ..a long distance slalom, with aspects of tight slalom, big wide pumping slalom and slalom through mounds and banks in the ultimate Naccos slalom challenge! could be on the cards.

because we live in the "smart state" with drongos like bligh and newman and fraser running the show ,after this week i wouldnt be surprised if they end up selling our souls to pull us out of the hole they are digging us into
As it turns out .(after a bit of research)..part of the funding agreement by the federal govt specifies there IS a mention of a skatepark upgrade and it may possibly be that council is 'incorrect'. We've got a meeting with a councillor next week to discuss that issue and also in regards to a 'multi use track' show him some concept diagrams..maybe a few photos of younger kids, girls and older guys slalom and longoarding..as well as younger kids scootering ect while bmx riders do flips right nearby ect..Don't know if an extension to the existing park would still be possible (since they originally weren't going to spend anything on it) but maybe they might fix it up. The longboard track , although unlikely to happen in a big way, still has potential if they are convinced of the positives and may widen the existing cycleways/pathways .What maybe a good wide section for an offset becomes a "passing buffer" so cyclists can ride around mothers with kids. The banked carving mounds can be described as "learning curves" low gradient curves to get little kids riding bikes, scooters ect used to navigating uneven surfaces ect. I may have to restrain on the use of the "s" word.....(skateboard)..as most people just dont get the longboard/slalom thing and have the " theres a skatepark already there" attitude.

Any thing that happens..is going to be better than would've happened (nothing) if no one got involved. and I'm sorta realizing how under-represented skateboarding is generally..and when it comes to things like this..committees, groups, organizations, media is the way to make things happen..and the earlier you get involved the more chance you've got.

The current focus seems to be on playground/fitness equipment..as there has been a well organized and positive families action group involved right from the very beginning...but our arguement is in amoungst a 4.3 million dollar budget..what really is there for a demographic of 13 -18 years? in the current plan...

We have slightly warmer weather up here on the Goldy but this weekend at Burleigh the wife and I were commenting on the amount of women 30+ that were riding along the see front in fitness gear......on ripsticks!!! Now if that isn't just a local thing perhaps a few of them would be more than happy to have wider cycle lanes....though it will be a bit dodgy hanging around a park for women to wiggle past and jump out to ask questions >:0)
