Hey Grits,

I thought I should respond to your comments regarding Jacko. I do not want to defend his comments, I acknowledge that sometimes he has “foot in mouth disease” but to infer that his is an easy life, living on easy street, is grossly unfair.

I can understand that it must seem that he is on easy street. He is sponsored by a large company and has had tremendous support by Hop and Hopkin racing over the years (you cannot underestimate how important Hop’s help has been). To say “go get a job” is very unfair. He has a job, it’s skating. Try travelling for 9+ months of the year and be away from family, friends and lover, sleeping on couches, or under cars, scraping together money to get around and being under pressure to perform week in week out. It may sound like the “rock star” lifestyle but I’m sure you’d appreciate it, it’s not. That’s his job and when he’s home, he works at the Hop shop, organises events including grom races, films and edits videos, writes blogs and trains. Every minute of the day is devoted to skating. Every dollar he earns goes to skating.

I want to make it quite clear – Jacko pays his own way. I am not a parent with my hand in my pocket dishing out money. I believe that kids should stand on their own 2 feet.  I do however, support him. We host international and interstate skaters in our home without question. We do that as a thank you for reciprocating when he is interstate or overseas and is likewise looked after.

Sponsors are also working on a budget, it’s not an endless stream of money. I thought your statement was a bit naïve, but then again, most people would not know what the life of a professional skater is like, so that is why I felt it necessary to respond to your comment.  Perhaps this will also enlighten the groms who are continually posting "sponsor me" vids...... Understand what it means to be a pro-skater.

As Australians we have a habit of cutting down tall poppies, perhaps we should be more open to what they actually achieve and understand what they have to do to get there.

(Sorry Matty for hijacking your post, it's not often I make a comment on these forums, but I felt compelled to respond.)

I saw this road on the way back from victor harbour and thought, hey that looks like a lot of fun. Good to see you're all over it matty!

I'm with leigh, i say a bit to charity and a bit to prize money. It's your call.

Who cares if you don't know which charity it is, at least it's going to a charity who really needs it. And i'm sure matty isn't the kind of guy to pocket the coin at the end of it.
If it was mattys charity to put on an even bigger and better event in SA then good on him, I know its hard to find cash sponsors for events and if you don't have the coin yourself then its often really hard to find funds to even get an event going. If an organiser made a bit of profit off each event and banked that for the next event, then eventually they would have some coin to put on a big decent legit event.

I say support the events no matter how much coin is on the table, its about the riding right? not the cash.

And Jacko of all people, are you being serious?
Surely all your sponsors, or parents, can help you with airfares, accom, ect. if you can't afford them. Or maybe get a job bro, Its hard but a lot of us do it.

well if you want to win maybe you should skate harder?

i didnt realise it was wrong of me to train really hard to get good so i could win and earn dollar... sorry for doing that. i wont skate anymore so you can 'have a chance' i guess

jacko the only ones who get paid are the ones who win (you) and if we do it the way i explained you still get close to $200. but if we make it $50, we won't get the numbers (local groms). thats the real issue here. its hard enough for these groms to get to this hill, let alone give away all their pocket money.

Thats cool Jacko.

I think theres a middle ground. I havent announced the sponsorship charity yet, but its Camp Quality Im talking to. Just isnt official yet.

Wanna make it out to charity? Pay the skaters that spend hell dollar getting there! That's charity...

You want more people to turn up? More tallent on the hill? Pay a good prize purse. Getting another set of trucks or a deck doesn't cover the cost of a plane ticket...

Not too sure on the whole 'giving it to charity' when u don't even know what charity ur giving it to... Just kinda loosely throwing around dollar to help a cause you might not even believe in? I for one believe in skateboarders getting compensated for their time off work and their hard efforts put in to making events bigger and better for the rest of the crew!

Well, to be honest. I don't like big cash prizes. Money makes it all too serious, and people sometimes get desperate. Id prefer to give away prizes from sponsors.

We might adjust the cost again, I think maybe we could make it cheaper. Id be happier.

yeah 50 is a bit steep for this sort of event. fair enough if we got a bunch of interstaters coming along and are expecting a decent prize pool, but i don't think we will get many interstaters coming this soon after collingrove.

i personally would happily give 50, but if it means that groms won't turn up then maybe we should reconsider.

how bout 30, 5 into the prize pool, 25 into charity. still a decent enough cash prize for the winner and the rest could get gear related prizes.

good point ch, especially since it is about an hour 15-40 (depending on traffic) out of adelaide
