Pre Christmas Slalom Session – Masters 17th Dec 2006

Finding a new slalom spot isn’t easy but we were lucky enough to uncover the Masters course just in time for our last race of 2016. Super smooth concrete, not polished though and a slight stepped slope is the stuff of dreams and long enough to attempt a 100 Cone race… finally a venue in Melbourne long enough!

Unfortunately, the locals consider this is a top spot to dump rubbish and building rubble so a massive clean-up effort was needed to clear the track and make is safe for racing, but as always, no pain, no gain!

The usual suspects turned up to race, Danny, Merv, Bernie, Hambo, Darren, Wedge, Brent and for his second ever race another of the old Rad Rats crew Andrew. It was a hot day and even hotter on the blistering concrete, and with a single marquee as our only source of shade.

As the venue is wide enough, Dan set a hybrid course with some wide offsets which we normally don’t have the luxury of space to do. While we were setting the course the wind picked up and started to blow the Cones all over the place like hacked Darleks from Dr Who so we had to double cone most of them, even those got blown around sometimes.

As the track is a little flat, i think we’ll move the start box a little higher next time to allow for some more speed into the course, but with the blustery wind you either got a tail wind or a sideways blast so you either got helped or hindered!

Hybrid placings are: 1st Dan, then Merv, Wedge, Hambo, Andrew, Darren, Brent then Bernie.

Hambo smashed it on his Milk Bar cruiser, look out if he moves onto his slalom setup!

Time for the 100 Cone race.

With Dan’s stringline and the clean up of even more rubbish from the top of the course we eventually set the 100 Cone course, with the rear and the corner of the Masters building forming a wind tunnel we were forever chasing cones and putting them back in the circles.

With most of us simply happy to record a clean 100 cone run, Dan smashed it out twice as fast as the rest up us with 2 Australian record breaking clean times. A third run hitting a single cone.

Fastest 100 cone (Clean)

Dan Monaghan at 26:43 Secs – Australian Record

Fastest (Dirty) 100 cone on the day

Dan Monaghan at 26:71 Secs – One Cone Hit

100 cone placings are: 1st Dan, then … quite a bit later … Merv, Hambo, Andrew, Darren, then Bernie.

Awesome race with some new faces and the promise of more racers coming on board 2017 looks like a fantastic year for Slalom, thanks for a great 2016. See you next year Cone-dodgers!
