How tall you are and what length of foot stance is a good place to start...

Its not the size its what you do with it ;)

but the size effects what you can do with it :P

the shorter one will be easier to break into a slide, but if your taller and have a bigger foot stance it can be too small and really un-predictable. 

if you are close to 6 foot i would say 40" , but if your shorter around 5 foot to 5 8"  the 36" would be fine. i am pretty tall and i struggle to standup slide a 36" whilst a 40" is super good :D But rayne killswitches are the go. they feel like your riding a drop down when you standy but nimble like a true top mount when bombing hills. best board
