ASRA - Australian Skateboard Racing Association

G'day!

I've recently decided to take up longboarding for something to do in my spare time. It looks like awesome fun, can't wait to give it a try. I owned a skateboard years ago, nothing special, I wasn't ever that good but that was years ago, time to give longboarding a try!

In the recent weeks I've done much research and reading on different shapes, lengths, models. I'd have it down to a maybe 2-3 boards them discover something else and have to completely rethink it or start again. I had almost narrowed a board down when I stumbled onto this site after reading into Australian boards. Now I'm back to the start again. I'm completely overloaded and overwhelmed to as which way I should go.

My main use for a board would be more downhill (sliding & carving) rather than flats.

To give you an idea to as what I was looking at:

landyachtz - all their downhill/freeride models

Sector 9 - 9 Star

Rayne - vendetta, killswitch, nemesis

Earthwing - Supermodel

Kind of gone off the Arbor boards.

Since I discovered the Australian boards I like the idea of buying one of them as long as I can find one that would suite me, as a beginner, and would perform as well as the above boards. There isn't as much info about them around obviously so I thought this would be the best place I could possibly go.

Any recommendations? Would I be better off sticking to an old tested and true model? Any advice very much appreciated and taken into consideration. Thank you.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Looks like Daddow and Glyde are the clear winners, I'll have a real good look into these. I'm glad Aussie boards are up there with the best!

trust me i skate all the time-haha....lol

You said you are looking at Vendetta, Killswitch and Nemesis. All these boards are worlds apart, you need to decide if you want Flex, Stiff top mount or a drop deck, then chose any board coz you will not tell the differences between the brands if your just starting out. Trust Me I skate all the time.

GET A GLYDE!!!

Check the Hopkins buyers guide out

Your going to get a million oppinions here and mainly from groms. (from myself included, an old grom)

Dont get to hung up on a board specificly for downhill as chances are you wont get too seriouse speeds for some time.

Realy think about what type of riding you will mostly do. (Chances are its not going to be downhill at 60,70, 80 or higher)

look for something versitle and just fun to ride. Most boards will be capable of speeds that you will not be comftable with without more experiance.

As you get back into it then look for something more specific.

Quality may also not be such and issue if your older and dont have the time and energy of the young who ride every day and probably clock up more milage in a month than some will in a year.

Just my two cents but i would be buying a mid sized top mount with 180 trucks and a set of 75mm wheels in the low 80's duro just to start with. (or call any store on right to get expert oppinions)

Maybe something from landyachtz like the switch models or the 9two5, but try a couple of different boards to find the best one and look at reviews, checkout www.daddiesboardshop.com they have mad reviews

Just get something second hand... you will soon get moving...  hold onto you money until you have been skating for a while and know what you like. I started on a second hand early bomb (2inch drop im pretty sure they are) I now ride a topmount Glyde.... way better.
