just keep riding. many of the top Aussie riders have been riding longboards for years (for example "jacko started in 8th grade"). I bought my first longboard in mid 2007 and have been doing proper DH for about a year, so still have lots of learning and experience to come.
your at an advantage cos your young (you guys learn quicker) and you've got heaps of really great riders happy to spend their time showing you how its done.
of course you gotta start with the basics (footbraking, sliding etc.) but if you stick at it and practice it won't be long before your racing against the best in the world.
anyway keep riding and try fix and any nasty riding habits before they become an issue (ie. stinkbug, grabbing the board with two hands, footbraking mongo etc.)
