Anton Fricker 1986-2009

Some very sad news; on Friday night, Anton (Anthony Fricker, AKA Skate Australia) was skating on the Gold Coast and had a tragic accident.

At the bottom of a run he came off his board and fell. His head took the full force, knocking him out. Emergency services were immediately called and Anton was rushed to hospital. He is currently on life support, while his family… Click here for the full story

Daddow Strikes Back

Steve Daddow won his first Conehead Cup race of 2009, remaining undefeated throughout the day and striking back at his main rival Jackson Shapiera who had to settle for second. Nathan Paff took third by edging out Haggy Strom by 0.03 of a second.

This was Melbourne's first time hosting the Conehead Cup, and the classic Melbourne winter weather; cold, wet and windy, was appreciated by all. The morning produced loads of frustration; the racers were unable to practice… Click here for the full story

No Bastardry, Plenty of Beatings

The cream of Australia's downhill skateboard and luge riders gathered in the tropical heat of Townsville for a weekend of thrashing themselves on the steep and winding Mt Stuart road, located on the edge of town.

For the most part there was no competition; this was a charity freeride to raise money for prostate cancer; the "bastard" that has to be beaten.

And beatings were the order of the weekend as all riders took some hits on a road that challenged everybody.… Click here for the full story

Ramón and Jackson Share Round 1

Jackson Shapiera and Ramón Königshausen shared the honours in the first Conehead Cup of 2009, with Jackson winning the ditch and Ramón getting his revenge in the head-to-head slalom.

Kincumber ditch is notorious for being wet at just the hint of rain, yet was miraculously dry on Saturday after a solid week's rain. A field of 23 riders took on the challenge, with Switzerland's Ramón Königshausen setting the early pace by using a slalom board and slalom-style pump to… Click here for the full story

The Hill Mastered

Jackson Shapiera edged out Dennis Westphal in a thrilling final to become downhill skateboarding's Master of the Hill. Dave Kelly took out the Luge, while in Classic Luge Adam Sparks had to come from behind to overtake Brad Sterritt.

The skateboarding final was a classic. Jackson and Dennis raced the entire course side-by-side, neither able to pull in front of the other. The racer with the inside line on the corner would pull marginally ahead, only to lose the… Click here for the full story

Rant: On Gravity

Gravity Sucks

The following is my own personal rant. Fire away!

Why do people use the terms "gravity" and "gravity sports"? All sports rely on gravity, so using "gravity" to define your sport is completely meaningless. Golf requires gravity. Football requires gravity. Swimming requires gravity.

What does the average person think when they hear "gravity sports"? I have no idea, but I bet it's not racing skateboards or luges (or… Click here for the full story

Paul Carey, the King of Na Kosta, was krowned King of the Kones for the third year in a row at Allawah on Sunday. On one of the most difficult courses ever set at the home of Sydney slalom he cruised to a 0.4 second win over Colin Beck, before claiming second place in the gnarliest skate discipline ever invented - the long jump.

Conehead Cup 2008, Round 1, NACCOSS

Round 1 of the 2008 Conehead Cup was all about the weather. Saturday's ditch race was cancelled/postponed because of water in the ditch, so instead the racers congregated at the Sidonia Garden, the site of Sunday's race, for an extended practice session. Occasional drizzle meant frequent periods where everybody waited until the course dried before resuming tweaking technique and gear.

Awaking on Sunday to grey skies and drizzle, it seemed…
