Following the tragic loss of Chris Renz recently, the community was devastated, most of us were shocked and deeply saddened by the news. A hole was left in the band of brothers. So unfortunate that he passed away as a result of doing what we are all so passionate about, DH. We thought it important to mark his passing with a DH event, marking the day and celebrating his life. The Jerryhill Riot, a grassroots event, was only a week out from the tragic event and with a gathering of riders from all over our country it seemed like the perfect way to pay tribute to our mate. Renzys Riot was born.

We began the day with a downpour of rain, “oh god” we repeated at the top of the hill. we waited it out and after 30mins it had passed and track clean up began. Racing this hill in the wet was an option if it came to it, but no one was looking forward to it.

go canada!

it was gnarly enough.

no prize for hitting the pole taj

With around 20 riders on the hill, it was the smallest showing for any event on the hill, only 11 would go to race it. but its not the quantity of riders that makes a good event its the quality. Every racer that came on the day surpassed all my expectations of their shredability. The hill is fast, narrow and fucking gnarly, yet after a couple hours corner sessioning, all the riders where keen and capable of mobbing top to bottom.

josh was killing it all day

Racing is 2man heats, and with some experienced riders like Dejan and Matti Rae lurking around it looked like an epic showdown, but as racing go’s anything can happen. Bathurst local and one of the fastest groms on track Mitch Thompson took an early spill and retired for the day, Dejan blew the fast lefty and ended up being passed on the bridge by young Josh Hardwick.

Matti Rae was solid through out practice and racing, busting high speed slides and getting good grip out and over the bridge. he moved into the finals with Josh and Adam Smith for a 3man finale. Adam had been bossing the run too, top goofy rider on the day had to negotiate the course, idk how and did it with steeze.

After the finals and Matti Rae decisively taking the win a challenge was posted, Dejan on Matti for the King of the Hill battle. with both riders keen to finally have a race together they went to the top to commence the fastest heat of the day. Dejan won off the push and led Matti full tilt down into the 70km/h chicane. i was there to witness the sickness, only inches apart both riders hit the apexes and where mobbing, as matti exited onto the straight he got a small twitch on the rear truck and instantly sent him flying, really flying, he flew off the road before landing in scrub land, barreled through the scrub with out slowing down directly at an old burnt out gum tree some meters off the course and ploughed right into it. so gnarly, he was a bit winded but allright, he had still won Code Red but and nothing could take away his still beaming smile.

heated racing between dejan and matti

so if that wasnt a gnarly enough event we stepped it up and ran a no-hand event, 4man style.

One of Aussies top riders and a world leader in standup Rob Laing had a horrible accident in the finals, pushing your limits like he does has achieved some absolutely amazing things (200ft standie) but also puts you a higher chance of it all going wrong. we are all with you mate and wish you a speedy recovery, your a complete shredding machine and hope your doing alright.

Skateboarding has been getting a bad wrap for generations, seen as a group of law breaking, jobless youths with nothing better to do except piss off locals and cause trouble.

As the sport has grown, developed and longboarding emerged, the nature of the riders has too, our community is built on a clean, safe and fun means of transport that we all enjoy.

As riders progress from carving the boardwalk to bombing the hills, we face a problem and daily are confronted with misled, ill advised perceptions of what our sport is and who our community are. This is usually portrayed by motorist yelling as we skate by.

With more younger riders joining our sport we have to raise skate awareness with other road users as well as educate GROMETS on road rules, warning motorist that we too use the road and we can break if we want to.

" they must have a death wish" or " they have no breaks", are all ridiculous comments if you have any concept of our sport and lifestyle. We should show the greater community of Sydney that anyone can ride a skateboard, mums dads kids and oldies, we love life and live each day to skate again.

I'm proposing Sydney's first Kritical Mass, a skate awareness initiative, with the hope of promoting longboarding as a safe, clean, fun way to travel. On Thursday the 27th at 5pm we'll meet at central station for a product toss, free drinks, to meet your mates or new people. From there we will bomb George st as a solid group, staying in the left lane, following the road rules and having fun. No prize for making it there first but heaps of give aways for the guys having the best time.

Once we make it to the Opera House we will converge for a photo of Sydneys Longboarding community and then disappear into the night, or down the carpark for a mondo china bomb SxCxBxS style, yewww.

Remember we are representing our community and although it's an outlaw event I will not tolerate any aggressive or disturbing behavior, if you do expect a kick up the arse and a ban from future longboarding events in Sydney.

Last Monday, in the early hours of the morning grommets and top riders from as far as Goldie down to Canberra converged on Clifton Gardens, Sydney, for a short but tech race, starting up in suburbia the track winds and dives down 2 hairpins and few sweepers ending next to the beach. With perfect weather and heaps of volunteers the racing began early and finished before 12 with a everyone stoked-out and riding better and better.

Jacko rocked up with a new Camera rig we have been workin on and encouraged all the groms to go faster and harder, while Yates and Benbro had their first runs on the hill pushing out hard and attacking the course. It was awesome to have six girls competing and in practice they worked hard to dial the course, learning from Maga and Lea and finding their groove.

Nice lines and good slides

Kam and i had a few easy runs at the top of the heats, matching up with Chad and Owen later on, Owen and i had been getting in practice over the last few days working on the course and safety aspects, Owen knew he had a better line on the final corner and was happy to wait till then to make his move, but before he could Chad took an inside line into the first corner, riding freerides he lost grip and slid across Kam’ss leading line, i snuck through and so did Owen.

Mezza's morning face

Mean while Yates and BenBro where taking names and met up in the finals, knocking out Jack Glen and Merrick and leaving them to battle in the consi. Mezza was on fire and pumped down the track to make up for his mondo mongo stiff foot push, taking riders on the inside and holding his line around the last corner.

The finals where Yates, Ben, Owen and myself, all ready for action and able to rally every corner, benny pushed out first and i slipped in behind him as we gripped the first righty under the tree’s, i felt a bump and it must have been yates getting in close behind too as we weaved the manhole cover and lined up the first drift into the top lefthander hairpin. We followed each other around the corner in line, one after another only inches apart from the riders in front and behind.

Owen all murdered out

The right hand sweeper was designed with slalom cones to push riders out a bit and encourage a little drifting but by the finals we were all gripping and ripping it, BenBro took an inside line while i went wide to line up the final corner, yates and owen shuffled in closer while benbro pulled in front a length or two. We all dove in to the last left hander hairpin and benny looked set to rail but drifted only inches off course onto the rougher pavement and continued to drift out , i stayed pitted on the inside but could hear Yates getting rad right next to me, then smash crash bang, Yates lost his puck, owen dove around him and benbro hit the gutter, in a spilt second 2nd place was up for grabs for the fastest runner to get their boards and benbro just pipped yates on the line. Owen was stoked with 4th and i was heaps happy with first.

We ran a freeride for an hour while we had marshals out and the girls round up their round robin race with Lea Robertson taking 1st Maga 2nd and Evie 3rd, meanwhile council turned up and had a yarn, they where stoked on the kids having fun and no rubbish being left around then the cops rocked up, chilled out and left after watching a few runs, they thought it was great, they mentioned it was a legal road and were happy with our marshaling system, young grommies where walking around picking up rubbish and families where playing in the park, pretty girls in helmets skating and everyone smiling, would have been hard for them to find something wrong with the event.
Thanks to HOPKIN, robbo and hop, you guys support our scene in every aspect, true stoke peddlers thanks for the equipment and prizes, cheers FIBERTEC, thanks for the boards and supporting our Aussie Scene from the other side of the world, cheers jackoi and all the gromies for filming the event , stuart marshall for the amazing photography and maga for helping organise, all so the boy on the radios, TRAV and RONNI you guys did all the hard work thanks again, see you all soon at shred the thread for more outlaw raddness.

Groms and organisor, the lovely Magaly checking the hill

Before racing started we were stoked to see our main sponsor turn up to check out the day and bring a massive bag of wheels and swagger for the winners, James from Hopkin Racing has been a long supporter of outlaw racing and I was happy to show him how our outlaw series has built community and been spreading the stoke. Another surprise to see was the owners of the land we were riding on, I thought the whole thing was going to be caned before racing had even started but after a quick chat we were giving the right to ride on the road and since it was private land if the cops turned up we could tell them to get stuffed too. too sleasy!

Mel ''the gun'' Pope and Rat ready for the straight away

We opened with groms and girls races, it had been raining for weeks and this was the first blue sky we had seen, it looked like rain was on the way but the opens would have to deal with that. the groms 16 and under were all super keen and the local kids from Byron had a tough race against the Qld riders, every race was heads down bombing, so rad to see them hunting the win with passion, this hill is definitely a big step up anything a lot of the grommets had even rode down so jumping on it and racing their mates is a good demo of how the skill is raising every time we hold an outlaw. After 5 rounds we had a finals ready including 3 Monkeypigs and 2 Byron shredders.

Little groms big boards

The chicky babes were out in force and representing Byron by bombing hard and not giving an inch against some amazing talent like Rat and Gemma from up the coast, local girl Mel Pope would smash the top section and take the lead only to be drafted into the main right hander, Kate was riding on my Fibretec made some amazing passes on anyone in front of her but had a long breaking stlye and had to fight for the final positions, the junior girl Jemma was on fire and every one was stoked to see her riding in the open girls too.

Junior girls champion Jemma was railing the corner like a pro

While the racing was going on we had a separate hill to thrash all day long, around 200 metres long and consistent pitch the hill was destroyed with thane lines as riders busted out long massive slides and the younger ones worked on their more technical tricks.

Spreading the stoke and having a good time, Jon, Seb and Kurt

We had a few late entrys into the opens and began racing with 22 riders, their were plenty of guns and surprises, and I was stoked to see a few local rippers get in to the finals end of racing, just about every race had a Brabury at the end, riders would bomb down riding hard and making a pass only to come in to hot for the final corner, wash out and end off in the grass while 2nd 3rd and 4th could cruize though or end the same, it made for some amazing action and spectators over the whole hill could watch the entire track.

Ash was fast as and owning all his races untill he was owned by the final corner and then jezzas fist

With the weather setting in finals were about to start, Jezza, Mike English, Jaidyn and Dan(Bryon bay) lined up as the crowd lined the track to support them, the first corner is dropped on left hand side and is like a boost if you pump it while the right hand side is a straitline though the s bend, the 4 riders all crammed onto the dipper to pump as much speed possible, they went 3 wide around the first left and Jezza found him self just behind mike onto the staight, while Dan and Jaidyn battled it out for 3rd, every one used the slight headwind to only slightly brake and rail the right hander, everyone was waiting for the hairpin that claimed so many leaders that day, but English held his shit together and Jezza followed him around for his first podium finish in 4 years while English took his first opens victory, Jaydin beat Dan to the line but were both stoked to have been racing in the finals on an epic day of racing.

Hop is like "Damn that kid's fast" and old mate's like "Damn is that Hop, I gotta get a photo". Oh yeah, English rips...

We held the podium on the slide hill, the rain would come in and dump a load then the riders would go smash it out sideways till it dryed again, local maddog Shimo had broken 2 longboards in as many weeks so ive passed on Manchild's Avenger for him to shred, he would tuck the whole slide hill then bust out combo pendys at high speed while slide champions the Lundmark brothers went head to head blowing the kids away with the huge bag of tricks.

1# Felipe Malaga checking out the Kaha’s before singing up.
Racing was going to start at a lazy 3pm on a Sunday arvo, riders had been there much earlier racing their mates and enjoying the safety meetings in preparation, todays first prize would be my fav Kahalani trucks sponsored by Hopkin Racing, the only set in Peru ive seen, rode to victory and gnarnage, would prove a worthy reason to throw yourself down the hill pushing for the best line and dodging the solid rock barriers the council had provided to take the win.

The gnar rock styles were a great reason to hold your line.

The local riders and fans turned out in force, as did team DH Peru , Kamikaze , Fico, Dakayro and Chaman longboards store, it’s rare for some groups to ride and race each other, sharing the competitive attributes not unlike Hopkin, Cre8tive and Early teams share in Aus

Free riding was all-day in between racing and whenever, the whole day was chilled out and everyone was feeding off the stoke, ”no rules and no wankers” was the policy for racing, leaving the riders to work it out at the bottom if need be.

Maga ran a Round Robin draw for the top 8 smoothly and unfazed, she got the boys moving and understood when the free riders just want to cruise down for the crowd, i could not have done it without her, chiki (my brother in-law) and Sombra (A.P.S.D. President) working the lines and keeping the track free.

Grom Styling on the only Rayne/killswitch

The local security gave us a visit mid racing, and extra points where awarded for dodging the 2 patrol cars, but they turned happy and moved once they sore the riding and enjoyed the racing on the sidelines for the rest of the day.

Peruvian Riders are so keen and hungry and to have a race situation was all they needed to shred the gnar harder than before, going for the win, balls out.
Local rider Junior #2 and Alonso Melgar Dellepiane #5 both mad cunts and great riders.

Everyone knows this road over here, its short and smooth and you can view the run for traffic before riding, everyone had their own style but non cleaner and faster than Felipe Malaga,

Felipe has always been an impressive rider, sliding the gnarly corners at The Vines with ease, showing me around lima on my previous trip and thrashing me down Centinella (redbull race road) many times, with an IGSA sanctioned race approaching in Tarma Peru, he’s got his eye on the win and without doubt the world, one of Peru’s best riders that rip it up harder then you, but struggle to get local sponsors and airfares to take on the world.

As humidity moved from 80% to a chilly 99% and under 10 degrees it was evident that riding was the best way to stay warm, spectators and crippled gringos braved the lima winter and were rewarded with some awesome sliding and passing on the final corner, the solid rock hay bales caused some gnarly crashes but saved the riders from the cliff opposing, no serious injurys all day, some broken pride and a lot of fun.

Safety meeting with the top Peruvian riders,

Bernardo Haker was the grom to beat, taking it all the way to the finals and fighting hard with 3rd for the spot, Ryan Humala took 4th after a wanted rematch, both were stoked with the racing and took home some bushings and bearings for their riding. Joze ‘Junior’ Cortez took 2nd after riding strong and unforgiving all afternoon, but could only follow Felipe for a Podium finish.

A.P.S.D. was stoked on the outlaw, much like A.S.R.A in its early years, is gathering momentum and holding sanctioned races throughout the country with great success, OTang team was competing here last year and plan again this year among others as the IGSA takes notice. The riders ive met and session with are as progressive as our own scene but with half the infrastructure, shops and events.
Ive had an amazing trip this year, riding some mega runs and skating with a great crew, big ups to everyone that turned up to this outlaw and came to support the DH scene in lima, im glad that in some way ive made an input into this sport without actually riding in it, im stoked to know that next year it will be bigger and better with more boards on feet and roads ready to be railed.
