I've completely changed the backend method for the way the rankings are calculated. There shouldn't be any change to the rankings themselves, so if you notice anything a bit weird, please let me know.

Charity races are generally how we get councils to give us free or discount access to sites.

I think you need a minimum number of riders (say 16) before prize money counts, otherwise me, Hambo and Boomer will be racing for the same $1000!

Trav,

we will make sure you have plenty to skate in Melbourne.

Trav, the prize money idea is interesting

The idea of points being based on number of riders is simple: more riders means the race is harder to win, and therefore should be worth more points.

Prize money is almost a substitute for number of riders (because more riders equals more income equals more capacity to pay prize money), but is subtly different. First, it encourages race organisers to give back to racers, which is, in general, a good thing. But it also has a direct effect on how hard it is to win the race, because the higher the prize money, the more likely that the best riders will attend.

But I can see a wrinkle - a race might be a high standard but have low or no prize money because it's for charity, or because the prizes are not cash but goods of some kind. Also, some people like to put on races with very low entry fees and low or no prize money because they like the low-key, grassroots, no pressure stoke. Those races might still attract a lot of people and be very high standard, and shouldn't be downgraded just because money isn't their focus.

In other words, while money is important, it isn't everything. Perhaps some sort of hybrid system could be the go, where, for example, a race could be categorised as 4a based on whether it met either of the following criteria:

* 48 or more riders, or
* $1,000 or more for first prize.

Maybe getting a bit complicated? What should the prize money cutoffs be for the three outlaw categories? And do we increase those cutoffs each year in accordance with the CPI? :)

Bernie i might be down there around then.

Fair enough comments, at least this was a discussion and not a few people out of hundreds on the list asking and then actioned.

What about changing the rankings underneath legit events by prize money rather than number of riders just to mix things up and help improve races?

The slalom rankings have used the "best 6" system for a while now.

Cool, no need to change a thing!

As to the next Melbourne race.....how about a "council" closed road...in the hills...slalom and downhill, plus the Springy ditch on Friday night... MOSSJam weekend  9th - 11th November....for those that want points....Come on Dooooown!

attending events is a lucky dip, there is no guarantee there will even be points allocated,.a few of my best results in the last 12 months didnt count because race organisers blew it,and werent able to produce a full list of results, this has a huge effect on the rankings,..now if we get choosy with events and the race we decide to attend doesnt go ahead or gets shut down, you can soon find yourself slipping down the rankings due to none of your own doing..the qld crew have had quite alot of races in recent times that havnt counted either so it hasnt shown a fair representation from qld

its a gamble and there will always be issues in fairness for all,i think this top 6 race system is the way to go as it allows for a few fails..but still requires 6 good results to do well,....

anyone who is deserving of a good ranking is someone who has made the effort to at least attend 6 races,.cant make it much easier for people.

I've made a small, but significant change to the way these rankings work - they now include only your best six results. At the moment this affects only one person, Marek, who slips from 2nd to 3rd, but it will affect a few more after the Space Race, and potentially a lot more as the number of races accumulate.

Yeah just realized that. We need a few more sanction races up this way I guess.
