Hey deeks - how do you do your wheel wells

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

Hey Sam - I sand them out of the foam mould and then when I vacuum bag the veneer I use clamps to press in the wheel wells.

  • Sam Ferguson

I have never heard of doing them that way. Yours look very clean

Thanks Sam - next graphic drying in the rare Melbourne sunshine...

  • Sam Ferguson

That's cool as, out curiosity how much was the rice paper and where did you purchase it. If you don't mind me asking

    no probs Sam.

Just under $50 delivered from Bateau Bay in NSW - that's for a 15M x 45cm roll of the stuff (shite-loads) which means you've gotta cut it up to run it through a normal home inkjet printer.  I got it off the guys at SurfBoardGraphics (http://surfboardgraphics.com/) - turned up 3 days after I ordering it online.

If you just wanna try some PM me and I'll send you a few sheets of it.

Hey guys I am about to make my first board. I'm using ASK maple and pressing it buy vac bag. I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get carbon or glass from around the Gold Coast or even Brisbane? I've been researching for ages and just cant find it. Also what types you have found work best?

Hey Adam - good luck with the pressing.  I struggled with the same question a while back and Steve from Fat Pigeon put me onto FGI (aka Nuplex) - they do CF and other exotic fabrics and their epoxies are good too (at a pretty good price)

I found they only had CF in either 2 x 2 twill or plain weave (the latter will yield the strongest reinforcement) - they have all manner of Glass bi, tri and quad axial

    http://www.nuplexcomposites.com/australia/?q=node/6

They seem to have 3 locations in QLD...

  • Adam Babic

Thanks seeks huge help! The epoxy I was thinking of trying is called techniglue apparently it is used in structural stuff. Have you had any experience with it? The only problem I thought could be it possibly cracking from torsional flex

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

no problems Adam - I haven't heard of it - I've used West systems epoxy and the FGI/Nuplex stuff and found Nuplex's was marginally easier to use and about half the price of West systems.

If you're using the ASK maple and enough layers, and reinforcing material you're going to get very little torsional flex (unless of course you're making a big arsed dancer that's long and wide!)  If you're precise with your measures of resin and hardener, then your Epoxy will perform very well.

had a quick google of Techniglue - it's more of a structural adhesive gel than a surface reinforcing product - I'm no expert but I don't think that's what you want.  the guys at Nuplex can advise... (plus, if you're going there to get fabric, it maybe make sense to get epoxy as well)

  • Adam Babic

Thanks so much man can't wait to start now should just be q couple more weeks now

@Deeks63 broooo!! that tech slider is looking soo dope! i just finished making a hydraulic skate press so im back in production mode now! ill post some pics of the press soon, so keen to be making boards again

Also @Adam Babic, so far the best resin i have worked with was the

'West System' resins, they spread out evenly really well and have quite a lot of resistance to flex, and impacts. I also go to Playwithcarbon for my fiberglass, and carbon, they are situated right near brisbane too

  • Sam Ferguson

    Nice board diggin the graphic
  • Sam Ferguson

Btw what wood do you make your decks out of
  • Sam Ferguson

Dw I re-read your post, but without the fibreglass are your boards flexy

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

    @Sam - I use Rock Maple.

  • Sam Ferguson

Are your boards flexy without fibreglass

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

A deck like this has some flex without glass 'cause it's only 7 layers - I've made some with 9 layers that have virtually no flex, but I also glass to stop torsional flex and to protect the veneer.

    Sweet board Deeks!

  • Dan Hawkins

just saw you guys talking about ASK maple, and was just wondering if you could help me out

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

sure Dan - what are you after...?

  • Dan Hawkins

oh, I was just wondering what ASK maple is?

  • Adam Babic

    Hey Dan
The 'ASK' is an abbreviation of Australian Skateboard Kits
    http://www.australianskateboardkits.com/#!uncut-canadian-maple-veneer
It's just a Canadian maple supplier that ships to Aus.

  • Dan Hawkins

oh ok, yeah i've checked them out. probably ordering some very soon

  • Dan Hawkins

and @deeks63, what type of pressing do you do? e.g. hydraulic, vac bag or good old clamps and wood?

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

Hi Dan - I use a Roarockit vacuum bag

  • Dan Hawkins

And when you put your wood in, do you have to wrap it in something so that when the glue seeps out, it doesn't stick to the bag?

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

@Dan - nope - pretty much nothing sticks to the vinyl bag...  I glass and epoxy the bottom of my decks straight in the bag as well - pops right out without any issues once the epoxy is dry - see below.  You do need to clean them out occasionally with all the dried glue and shit, but it's really easy to scrape off with your fingernails.

  • Adam Babic

For those of you using ASK maple
mine came stacked from top to bottom of the board in this order
    face
    core
    cross
    core
    cross
    core
    face
did you guys use it in the same order or change it up?
I was planning on keeping this order and basically throwing in glass between the core and cross layers and above and below the centre core layer
    also on the bottom
  • Dan Hawkins

sorry to ask so many questions, but about how long do the vac bags last and where do you get your foam for your mold from?
