Do you guys know how to apply a coloured graphic without using heat? I Tried using an iron, but it started to melt the glue, so I'm trying to think of a different way.
  • Marcus M

Thanks Steve. What are their prices like, and do they deliver? Their website isn't very informative haha

    Steve

Yes they deliver, I get a whole heap of stuff and it only costs $25 delivery 2 hours from their store. Prices are good, best to give them a call Marcus
  • Marcus M

Ah sweet. They seem to have a couple of options though, would i want the chopped strand mat power binder, or chopped strand mat emulsion binder or something else altogether?

  • Premium Member

    Steve

You'll have to do a bit of research but you definitely don't want chopped strand mat

ditto - steer clear of chopped strand unless you either want a lumpy finish or expect to do a LOT of sanding...

download their reinforcements manual here (about 4mb) - you're better looking to the WOVEN CLOTH products... or give them a call and tell them what you're trying to do ;)

Ah thanks a lot. If I'm not mistaken, I'll want something like the triaxial fabric, the biaxial fabric, the E Glass or the S Glass? And the latter two will be more expensive?

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

yep - something like that. I've not gotten FG from them before (Carbon Fibre and such for me) - a plain weave will probably provide the best result for a cost-effective price (if that's what you're after) - have a chat to them about what you're trying to achieve and they'll advise you on what there is available.

finally got back in the shed a bit this holidays have five pressed blanks on the go right now and one more on order. so i will be cutting shaping and glassing 6 decks over the next few days and weeks so keep you all posted.

Its funny as i get better at building them it costs me more for materials.

It must be the carbon tax...... lol

only so much rehab can do need surgery on the cartilage

  • Marcus S

i made a board and it's shaped as the tan tien

  • Dan Hawkins

Hey Marcus, hos did you get your graphic on?

  • Mudjimba

When you add up the time needed to build and the cost of materials it usually adds up to less than $0 profit if trying to sell custom boards.

  • Brodie

Hey bra nice board I made my own aswell but I don't no how to upload a pic
  • Marcus M

Hi I was asking about fibreglass a little while back; still haven't got round to purchasing any haha.

I found this woven cloth, and it seems like a good price: http://shop.classic-boat-supplies.com.au/west-system-epoxy-resin-ac...

Will this work okay? And what density would you suggest I use?

  • Mudjimba

I am still learning about glassing but 4 oz or 6 oz cloth should be ok.

What Mudjimba said...  All the West Systems stuff is pretty good.  personally I would steer clear of getting small quantities from a boat shop as you'll pay a lot more for it.  You're in Sydney, right?  maybe these guys?

  • Marcus M

Ok thanks. I've not heard of this Dion or JPS cloth before. What are their properties?

    Deeks63

I'm guessing they're all pretty much the same... woven glass fibres?

  • Marcus S

Dan my sister painted it on!

  • Dan Hawkins

    haha, that's pretty cool

Hey Guys just a heads up. Extruded polystyrene is available via bunnings. You will need to special order it in though. Bunnings have an account with Austech who sell Foamular ( their name for XPS ).

Cost is about $55 for a 2400 x 600 x 50 sheet. You will also have to pay a bit for freight too depending where you are

awesome - thanks for the heads up Steve.

How did you get the glossy black on your board?

  • Jose Basilio Navarro

i swear a wrote a description when i posted those photos, but anywho thats the board i made for my yr 12 major for design tech and was my third build.

after i fibreglassed, sanded, primer then some spray paint. picked up some dulux at bunnings then clear coated it

  • Dan Hawkins

It looks really good. The graphic is like the fatpigeon boards and I'm probably doing that sort of graphic on my next board.

I really want to make a press for a peacemaker style deck.
Any idea way degree the kick should be?
From what I can make out from printing pics and measuring with the protractor they are around 20-21degrees???

Hey Adam - I think I saw something a little while ago that sais 18.5 (similar to FP's  R18+ i guess) - I'll see if i can find the link again...

  • Sando P

what kind of wood should i use to make a stiff board

  • Dan Hawkins

If you're prepared to spend the money, get canadian maple. the downside is it is extremely hard to find

  • Mudjimba

Did anyone end up winning the build off? Here is my latest build, it the Alaia Skate inspired by those ancient finless surfboards. Sweet little ride.

    Sick looking board Steve!

  • Sam Stockwell

These are my latest boards, the top one (cruiser) i made a while back and only just painted it, that was just bunnings ply. The second one is my newest board: 7ply canadian maple, 37in 27in wheelbase. its prety sweet but my advice to anyone using canadian maple would be use enough glue on every surface.. this one i had to put some extra glue on later, because the laminates didnt press together completely

  • dean cunningham

HOLEY CRAP!!!.... steve that board looks sooooooo sooo good!!!

  • Sam ferguson

Hi where can I purchase wood to make a longboard I've have already tried bunnings 3mm ply but it was to flexy what do you recommend I just want enough to make one board
    Thanks anyone for your help
  • Marcus S
