my first board, flexy with kicktails made out of cheapass luan ply.

Conrad - 14 by 47 is great for 10 inch boards.

Will - careful riding that bad boy, it will likely snap : ( luan is terrible strength wise and you need to run the grain the other way

  • Premium Member

    Steve

Yeah your right only with veneer. If you build with ply lay it up with all the grain lengthways. Cross plies are built into the ply in the middle.

Apart from that it looks sweet!
  • Will Smith

yeah haha my friend told me after i made it. he said i shouldve done alternating layers? but i thought that was just with veneer. and anyone happen to know places in sydney with 1.5mm wood? ive tried north shore timber, bunnings, hardware and general, mrplywood and bills boards.

Check out Briggs Veneer, They have skateboard deck veneer for sale, thanks Steve, has anyone other then that had experience with bamboo? I am ordering my vacuum bag now and beoynd stoked!!!!!

  • Will Smith

thanks conrad but i called them a few weeks ago and they had nothing in stock, ill try again.

briggs veneer is for shortboards only. Mr ply and wood should have 1.5mm hoop pine ply which will work well for a drop deck

For people with Vacuum bags, do you put a smaller amount of resin when fibreglassing as the bag would push any excess resin so the side and stuff up the bag?

  • Premium Member

    Steve

No use as much as you need, It will not stick to the bag...

I'll jump in here with a query if thats OK?  is it a must to use release and breather plys when you use the bag to laminate the reinforcement (glass, CF, etc...)...?

  • Premium Member

    Steve

No its not a must. You can just use the bag itself, but you really need to know your stuff. I'm not at that level and doubt I ever will be. Ive heard Alex from wefunk just uses the bagging material. Good luck!

Does anyone know where I can get the release and breather ply? Also, the release ply first on the glass then the breather?

Wow havent looked at this thread for ages. So cool to see crew getting into it.

Finishing a little workshop right now but the weather aint playing ball.

I have tried a bit of bag experimenting like steve said plastic liners or just the bag, grrrrrrr, mission.

The peel and breather ply is the go.

Got two to take out of the bag this arvo from yesterday.

Nice work Adam - glad to see the workshop finally up but shitter about the weather you've had!  So breather and peel plys are the way to go, eh? good to hear, I had planned trying that with the next build.

Wow! I haven't looked here for a while & there is some good shit going down. Nice boards guys.FYI Can anyone tell me why nobody uses these guys?

http://www.awpanels.com.au/    seems they have a good range, not sure of the prices yet but this is where our University Engineering department buys its ply. Located in all capital cities.

Hey DDS - I tried them in my early quests for veneer and ply - the Melbourne branch - and they were none too friendly and unhelpful - maybe I got one of their guys on a bad day, but I've found others that are a lot easier to talk to... http://www.plyco.com.au/ are a 15 minute drive for me in Mornington and stock or can get in quickly an enormous range including bamboo plys...

  • Dad's Do Skate!

See that's what ya get for livin' in Vic,,Everybody is friendly in QLD!

Does anyone know which would be better in a vacuum bag? 4mm bamboo or 5 mm? I guess it doesn't really make a difference but I don't want to buy all this wood and find out my press isn't powerful enough

A vacuum press can exert an incredible amount of pressure - depending on the size of the project something like 1300kg's worth of it apparently - the thinner the material you are working with, the more likely it will conform to your substrate (foam mould, etc), so I would personally work with a thinner ply/veneer.

Very ghetto! Hope it goes well.
  • Alexander

its not going to be a huge drop just maybe an inch just to get the hang of the techniuqes needed for a more specialised build

Hi guy's I am new to this site but am stoked to have found it.  I have been building boards for about the last 14 months and could never stop as it is too much fun.  I have been caring for my wife who struggles with anxiety and depression, but is doing really well.  So board building and painting became my sanctuary in my down time to keep me sane.  I have developed my own brand which you are welcome to check out. I am looking forward to getting involved with your online community and connecting with other builders and designers like myself.  Cheers to getting creative.

absolutely no problems Conrad - that looks sweet - put up some profile (side on shots) so we can see the concave and overall shape.  nice work bruvva!

I think that is a flat template for his router not the concaves deck.... Conrad I'm not being picky but is the nose a little asymmetrical?
If it is maybe rule a center line on the template top and bottom. Then get a center line on the deck. Carefully clamp the template to the deck with the lines lined up. Then route one side. Flip the template then reclamp it all lined up and route the second side. I'll be straigt up. I have never done it but I have been thinking about how to use my router for a while.
    Dunno?????

  • Premium Member

    Conrad To

Yeah I see what your saying, I'll check out the Asym later today and maybe use a belt sander to fix one side, chop in half then use that, my idea was to bolt it with the deck bolts then rout the edges, ive seen videos and they say just to cut most of it beside about a cm then use the router, here's a video of people doing it

Got a cool little mini in the press right now.same mould as my first deck. But not using it like the micro drop, drop through. Gunna make the 6mm drop like little tiny kicks nose and tail. 22 wb.
Experimenting with a straight outof the press epoxy external gloss finish.
  • Mudjimba

Just cut out a sweet little mini last week for a bit of fun.  Was also the biggest design I could sneak through carry on luggage with tiger to avoid paying $60 for a sporting item.
