for any one who has made/modified a board. post some pics of your press or completed boards, its all good.
also, maybe share some tips on building and where to get supplies
also, occasionally, we can have a build off from time to time...
hey mattys should i come around to your place to pick the vacum bag and the silverash and the other stuff... it would be easier because it sound like there is stuff..
umm, last time i used the bag, it leaked, but im almost certain it was because of the sealing tape, as ive made like 3 boards, and havent replaced it yet, and looks pretty gaylord..
youd have to bring a car with a decent boot to put the veneer in, else your gonna have some troubles...
hey lads and lasses got the news a couple of days ago that ive ruptured my ACL :( won't be skating for 6-9 months at least after surgery, I was thinking of getting into a bit of board building to keep me from going mental, Ive looked through the thread a bit before posting this comment and ive done a bit of research, I also do have a press that I can use. But im still a bit in the dark, it would be awesome if someone could point me in the right direction.
usuable veneer of any kind is very hard to find in Aus. The people who do know where to get it know this and probably won't tell you. Your probably better off, availability wise, going for a thin ply - marine, hoop or baltic birch. As Dermott said Good luck ;) , you will need it...
Oi Dermontt you can get hoop pine and marine ply from mister ply and wood.
But I don't know were you would get Baltic birch from but if you find a place it would be very expensive .....
I'm a bit disappointed in my vac bag for pressing. Tried with te negative side of one of my moulds n it won't pump out enough air to suck in to the w concave section. Wonder if the hand pump Is paste it's prime?
The hand pump is probably fine. Unfortunately there is just not enough pressure with roarokit vac bag alone to do gnarly bends like sharp drops or w's. To do these you will need addtional external clamps.
@Sam Deighton~ I made my first board the other week with ply from bunnings. Im not in the city but the bunnings in Mt Barker had good quality AA Marine ply 6mm thick, NOT the Laun pine or whatever the cheap stuff is...I have stuck 2 of those together so my board has ALOT of flex but so far its going ok. Real fun altho I am not sure how long it will last.
Dougie - This has been covered before but you cant go past any of the titebonds. 3 is the best. If you can't get your hands on titebond any cross linking pva will do the job...
Just replaced the tape on my bag that I have only been using to finish coat glass. Best move I have made in ages. The bags bossticles have doubled in size
If you want a neater job then a belt sander then get your hands on a piece of PVC pipe about 30-40cm long (80 or 90mm dia, 80mm should be plenty as you would most likely run wheels no bigger then this I take it) then stick sandpaper up the length of it (tape it tight at each end or glue it on)... use it like a giant file and sand your wells out, will take a little while but it will look neat. (try starting with a course grit like 40 or 60 then work up to 100 or 120 depending on how smooth you want the finish.
I have an Isis. I love it. Only issue I have with it is that it was made for small feet. The w-cave is too severe on my front heel and I want to sand it down. Now I have looked and most people want to add w not remove it. Basically my questions are
What complications can occur?
Any tips, equipment or things I should take in mind when sanding?
-I'll be using a belt sander and cork block
Will I be creating significant structural weakness in my board?
Just take it slowly a bit at a time and you should be fine.
As you are actually making the board thinner in the middle you can probably expect it to be somewhat weaker. How much depends on how much you are going to take off. Shouldn't do much to the stiffness longitudinally but you may notice an increase in torsional flex ( diagonal ) and also if you sand a lot of material away, you may notice a decrease in lateral responsiveness as the board gives or bends a little in the middle as you shift weight in your front foot from heel to toe.
If you are only taking a small amount of material away though you should have no problems.
