@ mat, just drive along the road and you'll see a gravel carpark looking toward the city on your left and if you chill there for a bit you should see some skaters rolling by.

peace hill is on johnson parade in mosman park i'm pretty sure, it's the hill that a resurant called meads sits at the bottom of, just near the foreshore.

    Hi guys and girl,

Please take a moment to read this little headsup.

It's great to see this sport growing in Perth. Because of this growth hills and areas that didn’t used to be skated are now being skated...hills and areas that used to have one person ridding them now have a group ridding them, or numerous group ridding them. Our presence on the roads is alot higher than it used to be. The number of cars/people/police we are in contact with is higher. And it only takes one accident, or one skater to be a punkass to any of the people we encounter to ruin a spot for everyone.

I make a point of being friendly and open to the people i pass when im skating in my hood. They’re cool with me, im cool with them. No-one calls the cops, everyone’s happy. It takes one punkass to come to my hood and send his board into someones rendered wall, or to abuse a car, or to shoot through a stop sign, or to ride on the wrong side of the road, for those people i was cool with to call the cops next time they see me out riding.

Lots of us love the zigzag but we’re starting to get complaints. Please be courteous to the other road users, use a spotter on the blind corners (esp at the end of the zigzag where you turn left to bomb) ride on the right (left) side of the road etc. Im looking at getting the zigzag closed to cars, perhaps every second Saturday morning. Locals think it’s a good idea, so do i. Would be rad. Thoughts?

Also thinking of making a “Caution longboarders” (or something like that) sign to stash in the bushes at the top of the zigzag. Whenever anyones riding just put it up, easy.

This is going to take some maturity. The guys that have been around while know all this stuff, but with so many groms coming up now it’s more important than ever not to forget that what we do on the roads doesn’t just affect us, it affects EVERYONE ELSE that also skates that road, don’t be the one that ruins it.

    Smile

    -Ry

props to ryland agree with you 100%. and ill just add, PULL OVER if there is a car behind you. people DONT want to get stuck behind a group of skaters going down the zig-zag. it happened a few times last time i was out there and yall' didnt seem to be getting it!

    come skate tomorrow ry!
  • cath price

hey, some of youse got some good press in the POST newspaper this week...well done to the mozzie park local lads harry hoffman, the Kent Bro's, etc.

My ankle is feeling stronger these days so might be able to rejoin the fun someday soon...take care of your limbs shiela's and fellas!

@Ry, there is more than one girl in this group... ;)
  • Ry

    Thanks Ian,

Might be able to make it out to the zigzag tmoro arvo. Skated it today though haha. And Dan, if you're meeting at the 1st gravel carpark on Lascelles Parade you're missing half the fun! Start further up the road, right near the Top of Gooseberryhill road. It's a fun long run, not too slow not too fast (top speed 65ks, said the follow car today), you can hold the speed through into the first sharp left hairpin of the zigzag.

@cath, purely a typo, fully aware of multiple female shredders.

    Re-up:

  • craig bond

i'm completely with you ry. guys, be grown up. we skated treetop the other day, and these old people who live on the street saw us were completely cool with us. we were super friendly, super nice and they fully approved. what they didn't approve of is "some other kids who were here the other day who were hanging onto the sides of cars to get back to the top" and then "the car was following them back down very very close". these are the exact words of the people who live on this street, the people will be cool if we're smart and nice, and the people who will call the cops when they see dumb crap. but the people who will ruin it are skaters that are not being smart. to those who were skitching, you know who you are! DON'T DO IT!! skitching in full public view is really really stupid. and if you ruin a hill, especially that hill, you will not make friends and you will not be welcome to skate with crew that know what they are doing. i know this is heavy, but this isn't a sport for dumbass punks, it for people who are switched on and know how to have repect so we can keep skating. get off the road straight away at zig if there's a car behind. smile at people when you skate. it actually makes it harder for someone to hate you if you give them a smile and a wave. its easy for them to hate you if they see you on the wrong side of the road, or your slowing them down, or you're hanging of the side of a car.
    think about it.
    skate smart.
  • Cameron James

maybe we should get a discussion forum for people who wanna publish a book about being good goodies. guys you stress to much about the fuckin public n worry bout wat they think. i dont think people are that bored with their lives they are gonna call the cops. people should get over it because we are just having fun and doin wat we love.
  • craig bond

cam. how long have you been actually properly into downhill? how long do you want to keep skating? myself, i want to keep skating for a long time to come.so, i skate smart. i'm not being a "good goodie", i'm just being intelligent. "having fun n doing what we love" is a naive attitude to have, and it doesn't cut it when dealing with people and respecting the neighbourhoods we skate in. n you don't think people are going to call the cops? they do, i know from experience. the reason i care about what these people think is because its these people's opinions of us as skateboarders that determine whether we are welcome to skate in their neighborhood on a regular basis.
    just think about it ay?
  • Daniel Martin

yep. defs a good idea to respect other people on the road and neighbourhoods.
even im 24 yrs old, serve people (customers) every day for a living, and am still learning about longboarding and the public. its its own ball game.
gotta keep it real and put yourself in other peoples shoes which can be hard to do when you wanna have fun shredding and focus on a new move or your tuck.. but that's what the older, wiser and more experienced skaters like Craig, Ian and Ry are for, hence the below. listen to everything they say, respectfully, they know shit and will teach you heaps of other fun cool stuff too.. also let's keep looking out for each other... it's good to have each others back so we can continue to share these good times :-)
also Shannon is hardcore street wise so listen to him too.
cheers lads. hope to see you all out soon!

    Raine Kent

yeah cheers guys, i agree with you dudes, skate safe, skate diplomatically :) but skateboarders do have a reputation for being punk asses and sometimes theres not much u can do if certain locals have already made up their minds on the subject, like those old people who live at number 22 or sumthin at treetops, the old couple are real dickheads and i probs wouldnt piss on them if they were on fire, the lady drove on the right hand side of the road intensionally to make us fall off and she nearly killed jack, so if u believe their bullshit thats cool, but they are knobheads and were the people who called the cops on us about a year ago for "skating down a hill", they dont like us for some reason, but that doesnt mean they have to go out of their way to make our lives difficult, im still seething with anger about when she was driving on the right side of the road
  • craig bond

dude, some people hate, n thats a fact. i don't know if the old people we spoke to were the same people who tried to run you over, they didn't seem like haters, they were more just concerned at seeing people skitching the other day and how close the car was following, and didn't seem like people who would drive on the wrong side of the road, they seemed too caring, they thoght it was great we were there and being safe. but yeah, there are people on treetop who don't like us being there, i've had run ins with them.but jus be nice. dude, i've had the cops come there to move us on and we ended up proving we could stay, the cops left and we kept skating. that doesn't happen with a cocky attitude, it happens because you stay smart, stay respectful and know how to deal with people (and cops!)
skateboarders have a reputation as punkasses, fact. which is all good if you are happy to hang out at the local skatepark, cos there you can be as punkass as you want and still be free to skate. problem is, as longboarders, public roads and being a punkass don't mix. i wanna skate big hills for a long time to come, so i don't be a punkass. if people hate, i try deal with them and get them to understand and get them on side. that way when i come back, they're not so fussed with me being there. if cops kick us out, i do so completely happily and friendly. yeah i'll be back, but at least if they come again, they'l remember how i dealt with them last time. u might not believe me, but i promise i've had all of this happen.
skateboarders by nature, deal with obstacles, whether its tricks or hills or whatever. thats what makes it fun. the best skateboarders are the guys who can deal with obstacles better than the next guy. i just see haters and cops as obstacles to be dealt with as best i can, and as best i can means i can keep on skating the spots i like. guys that deal well with people are in my eyes good skateboarders. watch a movie called chlorine, n take some tips. be a punkass when its suitable(skate hills, skate roads be where you're not supposed to be), but hide that side when you have to to play your cards well.
be friendly, respectful, don't skitch, and smile and wave.
  • craig bond

hell long post. sorry. i just don't want punkass attitudes ruining perth hills.

I think that this is what it boils down to:

Downhill skateboarding is starting to "Explode" in WA.
As a result, a few are becoming a lot.

I believe this sport has the potential to generate a living for a few with the right public support as its fast, fun to watch and will have lots of followers buying what ever the top riders are riding.

Now, lets look for a moment at Street Skateboarding. The general public soon got sick of getting collected by grommets at shopping centers, etc, etc. As a result all good street skateboarding spots now have all kinds of anti skateboarding devices (bolts in hand rails, etc, etc). They are not an after thought either, they are designed into the public areas. (Look at the new park in Northbridge with the big screen TV).

The last thing we want is a series of Anti Skateboarding devices on good hills, etc, etc (The device could be as simple as a row of cats eyes).

There is a way to avoid this, and it is being outlined in other posts.

@Raine: Consider Reporting the people who almost ran you off the road to the police. Sounds like an open and shut case of dangerous driving if she swerved to hit you. They will let her know that if she tries that again, she will loose her license. Also, after you reporting actions like that, the police will quickly loose any sympathy for her.
Does anyone else have thoughts about that?
  • craig bond

i'd say don't report them, because u don't have a right to be on the road in the first place. talk to them, make friends with them, but keep the cops out of it. they rarely side with skateboarders.
  • harry hoffmann

oi the guy that was skitching was probs liam, he was doing it at like 70km being towed by his dad lol, lets bash him :)
  • Connor Brown

    who likes icecream? haha
yeh guys just skate cool hit the hills when there arnt many cars and have a good time ay just avoid the people who complain and stay out of the cops way. skate cool and have fun.
@ harry haha we better ay hahahaha
  • Cameron James

friendly is good but puttin signs at the top of the zigzags is just a welcome sign for cops and rev heads to annoy us. pass on that idea ay
  • Daniel Martin

they are all very valid points guys. it's good to see people getting involved and talking this over so we can have more of a mutual respect for each other as a crew and all benefit out of this.

yeah im real sorry guys, i admit, i was the one who drove down treetops behind with a camera and didnt have that outcome cross my mind at the time but now totally understand and definately wont be doing it again. it's best to always be as careful as you can and even then obviously i wasnt.. but without this feedback we wont learn so yeah kudo's again, especially to craig.

for zigs i think that it's best just to have a follow car where possible and to keep your eyes and ears alert for cars... even last Sunday I noticed I had to say PULL OVER several times when there was a car coming... we all know that it can be a bit annoying that its a dent on your how you're cruising but at the end of the day we all have to look at the big picture; the fact that it can affect whether people/cops/haters or whatever knuckle down on us skating that road... and anywhere really and yeah there's no point being a longboarder if you can't see the sense in that.

    keep it real
    p.s. i hell like icecream :-)

p.p.s hopefully the weather is good for tomorrow (Tues) otherwise Thurs for C.O.P. jam
