good to see some fresh crew having a crack at slalom!!! is this who you were asking about the skennett for mick? if so let me know, i'm looking to offload the deck as well plus have a heap of risers if needed
keen as for this, I have no event planning skills but I will put my hand up to assist in any way I can for the Sydney event(s?). Plus I'm waiting on GAMSAT results and need some stuff to put in my community work portfolio haha everyone wins!
we got rained out of the ditch tonight, so we went to Monash Uni. The bitumen lower deck was wet also, so we went to the upper deck, which does not allow a very long run. So we had a Z shaped course, with easy cone spacing, and 26 racers. The skill was in getting around the tight corners and pumping to keep up speed. Skateboarders of both slalom and downhill disciplines attended and had a blast. Timing was done by homemade wireless timer. Prizes were awarded for 1 - Marty 2 - Brady Lane 3 - Wedge most improved - Seb best slam - rainer and furthest distance travelled - Marek.
It was not fancy or very difficult, but it was F'n Cold, so everyone stayed warm by having to work hard on a slow course that needed lots of pumping.
Big props to the sponsors, Globe and Goliath. The really good prizes have been held back for the ditch!
Next week the ditch is going to be dry...no I really mean it this time!
Thanks to all the Melboure crew for being so rad and welcoming to this sydney slalomer. Big thanks to the organisers and particularly to The Bear for running me back to the city on a cold rainy Melbourne night.
Was great to see some younger longboarders having a blast trying to beat their own times. Slalom is one of those things that is not that appealing to look at but huge fun when you are doing it.
I recon we go with a perpetual slalom ranking same as downhill, easy to do just use the same criteria as ASRA has for downhill, 1 month notice etc etc. and start listing the rankings. We can still have a crowning/presentation at or near the end of the year. Thoughts?
Marek, seems like a good idea, so unless someone comes up with some reasons why it's a bad idea I'll get the ball rolling re the rankings infrastructure and everything else.
That Ranking system would be very good to have, specially on this site, which is the rightful place for such a thing.
It is clear from what Robbo put on the other site, that we now have to look after slalom ourselves, and as a result I am no longer sure of what resources are available on this site for such a thing.
Jeez Bernie shouldn't you be in the Ditch! Hope its not raining again.
While Charlie is fine for discussions I think this site works better for organising races and more formal sessions. Also I trust ASRA will still be able to provide insurance for legal races and loans of equipment etc for other races.
Maybe there could be a more formal way to request insurance cover and equipment loans? An application form or a particular committee member who acts as the go to person or something might smooth the way.
That's great if you can get that started Bugs. Might be unfair to include any races so far but as I came a career best 10th in Melbourne I'm open to persuasion.
The irony of a skateboard racing site where one form of racing makes up about 50% of the site, around 40% freeriding and sliding (none of which is actually racing) and the rest goes to all other forms of racing.
I'm all for a ranking system, it would be good if sessions like church at Allawah were actual grassroots events. It would definitely push people to improve and then maybe have a national championship once a year. Sort of like how downhill has the oz outlaw series with Newton's so it would bring everyone together for at least one event to determine who is boss
Racers paid $2 to race, and entered a raffle for a very cool Globe longboard to run,so we were able to raise some useful cash for the MOSS water project in Swaziland.
Bugs if you want to add these results to the proposed ranking system you have flagged 7 posts back, send me a pm and I can send it to you in csv format.
Did you get the results that I sent last week, cause Marek really did earn some some points?
Welcome to my world Bear, I've been losing points for 5 years now. Instead of points you just get that warm fuzzy feeling that people don't fully understand unless you have not raced for the purpose of running an event
Nice turnout Bernie, jeez we need more ditch races. Bugs is gonna need some full names rather than nicknames if possible in order to put them in the rankings
a general comment on racing, rankings and races. Slalom needs to operate more like the downhill. No need for a series just bang down the races tie it together with perpetual rankings meaning people don't always have to travel all over the country to get a race and a ranking. Local jams get proper recognition, people put on more local races to get points and generally have fun. If people need insurance, infrastructure, automated formats, rego systems or some general admin stuff, they hit up ASRA the same way the downhill kids do whom seem to be able to put on a race every other weekend.
As far as ranking points go if you put the extra effort and get down a legit race than the ranking points available to that race are higher. You also get more points if you get more people to your race no matter what the level
Robbo, does that all mean that you will now attempt to improve your response times to pm's and return phone calls so that we slalom racers can actually "hit up ASRA". I know of another race organizer who has almost given up on ASRA. Feel free to moderate this comment and pick up the phone. Hop has my number.
Why the big cry Bernie? Have I slighted you in some way mate. Not sure when that might have happened but I apologise unreservedly for whatever it is your pissed about. I don't recall having a missed call or an email from anybody nor do I think I have missed any of the 15 odd PM's I get a day on ASRA. All of my contact details are on the Contact ASRA page on this website and are freely available to everybody. Feel free to hit me up mate, just like I have done for the last 5 years, I'm happy to help anybody with anything anytime
OK kids it's on for ol'Lizzies birthday holiday on monday, 13th June, 10am -3pm. A day of short course skateboard racing at Wadalba sports field carpark. Me & my girls are rounding up a crew of friends to come & do a diverse series of skateboard racing disiplines. Everyone welcome. I'm looking at setting up 3 to 4 different race formats on the day.
1. Dual lane cruiser class slalom. 15-20 cones max. No cone penalties, only DQs. Not timed Z-Flex,Penny, Globe, Sector 9, OZI, etc. No size restrictions. We'll run a little double elimination round for this I hope, Aimed at newcomers & ol'farts on retro setups from under the house.
2. Single lane hybrid slalom. 30-35 cones. For experienced riders & gnarly newcomers. Timed.
3. Timed laps of the oval. approx 350 metres. Push, pump, bomb, push, push pump. A bit of down, up, down.
4. Mini mellow downhill races. If time permits.
Let me know if you need detailed directions if your coming. Anyone keen to help out with set up & timing let me know.
Hey PC even with the late notice you should put it up as an event, I recon more people will see it there. Think you might be surprised how many lurkers here would love to attend a day like this.
Tone is working on having the BOSSJam on 16th July, and it looks like they will have a session at Elanora Bowl. Some MOSS guys (who also wiggle) are getting excited. In the past we have found that having a slalom race on the same weekend as a BowlJam pulls a strong field of competitors, a good crowd, and huge stoke, like we will be doing at this years MOSSJam in November.
It would be good to see slalom racing returning to Gold Coast or Brisvegas at the same time as the BOSSJam.
As for Victoria, its F'n cold here at the moment, so indoor parks and the snowfields are getting most of the action. Hopefully we can get the serious cones out again in late July.
Wacky Races was a fun afternoon. It somehow stayed dry after I made the call to postpone it. Mainly for the sake of long distance travellers & the threatening weather. Had about 16 riders for a diverse set of short course races.
Great response from the newbie grom on the slalom course.
Check out the photos by Lisa & Evy on my page & the brief write up on the event page. i'll post up results here & there for the push race times & slalom times. Fun bit of mellow DH racing & bombing at the eend of timed runs.
Hey PC glad it went off! Looks like a good location from the pics. I can't wait to get up there some time. 16 riders after you cancelled is epic, would be a big group with better weather!
On more Sydney centric slalom matters, I am hanging out for another Church session, esp hanging to skate pump station again, but I'm not fussy and it might be cold up there in July.
Allawah, Mountains or Sutherland? I'm thinking 10th of 17th of July? Thoughts, takers?
17th is the day after the Hopkin race clinic at pumpy so we will not have to do an intensive track clean. I can have an SGS course marked and tested in advance will need that slack arse farker Robbo to back up two days running though, should not be a problem as he is technically an associate member of the BMB and resides part time at the ASRA clubhouse in KTown which as we all know falls under the jurisdiction of the BMB.
I Vote for the PumpStation the fastest slalom venue in Oz
Hey guys, Robbo has convinced me to start up slalom, I was thinking of a fullbag junk in the trunk with bennets and some downhill wheels, but i thought i mayswell post up here, does anyone have a deck for sale?
Mick I think that is an offer we can't refuse for the next Church Session on the 17th of July. We can do a Sutherland/Allawah sess in early August maybee.
So any objections to pumpstation on the 17th?
If not i'll put it up as an event later today.
Hey Conrad Junk in the trunk sounds good. I've never seen on in the flesh though. Very wide with a mellow kick I've read. If you want a cheap starter board get a cheap park board, take the nose off with a jigsaw and redrill the mounting hole for a longer wheelbase. You'll get plenty of help here with setup, wheelbase wedging etc. For SGS at pumpstation just bring your downhill board.
Its been a while since my last church attendence! My gnarpark efforts the other night suggest some rustiness of technique which may require an offering at church.
the 17th is the day after my b'day so i think the planets might be aligning for a visit with the BMB bretheren, we'll see.
hey what is the go with tracker wedgeing, i have a BDS/CDS deck running trackers, the back is flat and the front has about 7 (maybe more) with orange khiro bitch bushings in it, is it worth going for abit more angle in the board? IE dewedge the back more and add a few more degree's to the front

Since we had an Interstate competitor, does that mean it qualifies as CHC2011, ROUND 1???

Braden Schlager and his site was how we got inspired and how we got organised to pour the concrete roll-in to the ditch.
And for many of us, Charliedontskate is where all this started!
