Whats the best way to get a good shiny black board, dudes? Not a full design just black. Spray paint? And should I do this before or after putting on fibreglass? Cheers, Dude

@Dude - Spray paint over the top of the finished fibreglass does yeild a good result - make sure you get a good quality paint and not some cheap shite as some don't bond well with the fibreglassing.

Didn't feel like making a whole thread for a few question so...

Does anyone know of any places to get various veneers and f250 (molding) foam for a press?

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

Hey Thonas - youo're in Vic, right?  Melbourne somewhere hopefully...  I found a place in Bentleigh East where you can get Extruded Polystyrene foam (perfect for making moulds) if that's what you are after? https://secure.solidsolutions.com.au/view_products.php?cat=65

Veneers are a harder ask in the southern states - you can try 1.5mm ply - the behaviour of the thin ply's is compaprable to veneer - Plyco are good (Mornington and Fairfield) http://www.plyco.com.au/index.php?main_page=index

introducing..."fingers crossed skateboards" hahaha  (hopefully it works)

    what do u think????

Omg that's you first deck. I'm quitting deck making. That's amazing.
Glass may not adhere to the paint???? Epic effort.
  • Thomas

Thanks Deeks, the foam looks good. I'll keep hunting for veneer but i might just end up with ply.

@Thomas - no problems - the guys with the foam - you need to ring first and pay for it (they don't do cash sales on premise) via a credit card.  It's about $34 for a full sheet which is 2500mm x 600mm (you can buy half sheets as well) - good luck.  If you get real stuck, I've got some.

Well done Dean, Looks great - i'm pretty sure you can uncross those fingers! Drops look good, concave looks good and I like how you have dropthrough mounted the front trucks to give it forward rake. Adam is right that is an amazing effort.

  • dean cunningham

    hehehe thanks guys!

yeh steve i kind of attempted copyed my mates "early arift", cos i liked the feel of it.

umm what do u mean adam?? u think there might be a problem with the fiberglass sticking to the board??

ive never fiberglassed b4, so i got no idea! hehehe

Resin likes to get into the pores of the timber to hold onto it. The paint fills all of these up an makes like a little layer of plastic between the wood an the glass. So it might peel away later. It it might work like a dream??? Just a thought.
  • dean cunningham

oh crap didnt think of that  :S

ohh well ill just have to see how it goes. trial n error i guess haha

  • Thomas

@Dean good effort. That looks sick. What wood did you use and where did you get it? Im struggling to find some good stuff.

  • dean cunningham

umm got it from mr plywood. i think its 4mm x 3 peices, and he just told me it was sum sort of hard wood, i got no idea heheh

  • Mudjimba

Ok I had a shitload of fun with this build. The Maleny Wood Expo asked me if my Longboards are made from sustainably harvested materials, which they are of coarse. But it inspired me to produce this rank beast for the build off, so here it is 'The Off Cut'.

  • Mark Gorman

Like the red paint , or is that blood after having a ride.

  • Mudjimba

Yeah I reckon if you did attempt to ride this blood would definitely be spilled.

  • Thomas

Sick shape. Does the waste effect the torsion flex? I just put my first board in the press an hour ago.

  • dean cunningham

    thanks man!!!!

ummmm im not sure yet ive only rode it for like 10minutes, cos i only just finished it.

but it seems pretty stable so far, i cant feel much flex or movement in the deck at all. ill have to ride it sum more tomorrow.

good luck with ur board!! post sum pics when ur done!

ooooeeerrrr!  a new "toy" for making wheel-wells?  Do tell brother Adam...

  • Mudjimba

  • Daniel Davis

Hey Guys  i have a press to use but don't have a mold to shape the board,  what  materials should i use to make the mold (btw the press is a good proper one at school)

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

@Daniel - what do you mean by "a good proper one"?  Is it a hydraulic press or a vacuum press?  One will require something like concrete the other foam.

  • Daniel Davis

    @Deeks63  Its a 20,000 tonne hydraulic press,

  • Premium Member

    Steve

    20000 tonnes! That's quite a lot - maybe only 20000kg?
  • Daniel Davis

Oops, just saw that yeah its a 20,000kg press

  • Daniel Davis

so anyone got a good place to get foam from in Sydney, NSW

  • Will Smith

Anyone selling a Roarockit vacuum kit or any other form of vacuum press? And to anyone with experience, I know this has come up before, but can someone please clear up if it's possible to do 40" molds in the 47/14" bag? That's the biggest one at carbatec. Thanks, Will

  • Will Smith

Also has anyone made a board with 3mm ply with W concave?

  • rory

will you should be fine with a 40" mold. my mold is 41" and i dont have any problems pressing a board

  • Premium Member

    Deeks63

@Will -you should be OK with the smaller bag. You will just need to be careful of the seams. They need to be under compression not tension otherwise they will fail. Make sure you center the mould and veneer in the bag...
  • Thomas

Just finished sanding. Tails a little wonky. It has the flex of a vendetta from what i can tell.
