sounds like heaven . the biggests issue ive found with dealing with councils over the years is who is liable if any one trashes themselves so the design needs to address this issue of safety, this will help smooth the waters with government departments. it would be unreal to be able to go for runs in the middle of the day rather then dawn

I think that the best chance that we have at a minimal cost is a shared facility at Stromlo forest Park.

They have welcomed us in the past for Slalom events.

The park is an on going project and the proposed 12km road cycling track has not reached the development stage yet.

Talking (via emails) to the management and ACT government in the past they have been possitive with the possiblility of skate and luge using the facilities.

As an individual I do not carry too much weight but perhaps ASRA with its increasing Membership and 3500 followers may get their foot in the door for inclusion on the discussions for future developments.

The facilities that they are planing such as the 12km Cycle track with hill climb up / DOWN the left side of the mountain and chair lift back to the top would most likly be very suitible as it is, but some consideration for safety of skaters may be good to include in the development stage.

I was on the mailing list one upon a time but have been out of the loop for about 12mths.

I know the numbers of longboarders is growing but without a privatly owned complex I dont see councils or local government splurging on longboarding.

Sketching on the back of cylists may be a back door, especialy in cycle loving Canberra.

Yeah, thanks Brad, wasn't aware of that!  I am going to bring up the issue with my local member without the petition first, she seems pretty keen in developing the area towards the younger generation with other matters, hopefully I can tag this on her list of things to work towards!

Wise words Brad - just caught up with your first comments.

In conjunction with your suggestions we should probably shortlist a number of sites - regardless of the probability of getting approval. From that list we can then boil that down to a handful and then find out the requirements/possibilities of approval from the relevant local councils - each one will differ or vary.

Once we have identified these sites and the council regulations we can take a strategic approach to each council. Until we have the above - even with a ten thousand name petition we have nothing to focus our efforts on.

I second the Mt Steele location - from what I can see so far its part of moore park and

"The management of Moore Park, except the two stadia, was transferred to the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust in the early 1990s. "

I also believe it falls under sydney city council.

As far as my role in this - I'm happy to help at a digital marketing level in the first instance to create some awareness and help get some petitions signed down the track as well as any face to face with council.

Jonny you started this group and dont want to take that away from you - I would just suggest though that if we gonna run with this we start to set in place some timelines. i.e close of date for location suggestions, have indication of council requirements by such and such a date,  then date to reach x thousands signatures - thsi will provide the focus needed to achieve this.

Brad you suggested a meet up to discuss - thoughts everyone ?

Hey skittles

If you want to put a petition together you should find out what the petitioned body will accept.
i.e. If you are petitioning a local government body I can tell you now they will not accept a list of names without addresses and a signature or if they do accept online petitions (very few government bodies will) you at least need email addresses as well.

You also need to have an exact/ consist list/ request for what you are petitioning for. Words like "possibly" and items you can initially do without should be kept off the list as they can be added at a later date following approval (berms/ banks etc)

So yeah, give the Council or whomever a call (don't mention what for) and find out petition requirements and seek out some assistance if needed for some wording. Ideally the wording should be such that you can attract signatures from walkers and cyclists If possible ,)

Get local schools on board.

Good luck.

Sorry for those who have suffered me chucking this around everywhere! but I'm sure the same names can be used as a petition anywhere in Australia.  Need more names though, should really get up to at least 300! Then it would have some pulling power

I really think it's not to much of a stretch to go from grass skiing/boarding/karting to downhill skating, conceptually, if you were to approach government or groups who could finance or support it.

i.e. "People already do activity X......our activity Y is related and rapidly gaining popularity while X is on the decline......please give us permission and money to set up a facility for Y..."

Hi All,

Haven't posted in a while but keen to get involved in this project.

On phone atm, but will add to my previous posts in Hop's thread where this group spawned from.

In short, this is very achievable, assuming we start off small (Mt Steele) and go from there.

Prob best to meet in person to nut out a plan/ committe and post updates here incorporating contributions as they are posted.

Keep the negativity and trolling in this group to a minimum please.
