Electric skateboards – new project

We have all seen these around and thought RAD then picked it up and felt like you need a spotter (no I don’t lift bro). Then we have the new breed Boosted Boards (2 x 1000W motors) awesome idea and all but $1200 (plus $60 delivery to Australia) and you end up with a Vanguard and wheels with bolts in them (don’t get me started on the wires under the grip…). You could go an Aussie brand http://evolveskateboards.com.au/  $1050 looks cool for kids but this would be like rolling on Marty’s hover board and I want Biffs, they are 200W (Legal limit in Australia).

The problem with DIY is how do you mount the motor to your trucks, the only real option is to get a mate who is a machinist to make the bracket and someone with a tig welder to attach it. Enter the new DIY contenders Alien Drive Systems (https://www.facebook.com/AlienDriveSystems?fref=ts) and Alien Power systems (no affiliation to either) 6000W monster, 60 km p/h top speed (so far) and less than 10 kg. These are so fresh they have only started production in the guys work down time. The issue is it’s DIY but still depending on how you source your materials and the setup you can do it cheaper than the current models with minimal effort. I’m thinking 1 wheel drive 3000W will suit me as a transporter and cut down on weight.

Materials:

1 x Alien Drive Kit $180

1 x Holey Trucks $74 (Macs support the scene)

1 x Abec 11 flywheels 76  $99 (Hokins support the scene, $61 ebay they don’t support the scene)

1 x Alien Power ESC $175 (Could go cheaper from Hobby King but I’m no RC expert or engineer)

1 x Alien Power 3000W motor 6374 170 kv $100 (Could go cheaper from Hobby King)

2 x Hobby King Battery $100 (Depends on the range you want could go to $200)

1 x Wireless RC pistol controller RX TX $20 (Can use a Wii Nunchuck don't know the price of the setup though)

I have a carbon belly carver that I picked up brand new from ebay for $60 delivered

Finished 6000W monster

Total cost so far $770 I will have to get some connectors and wires from Hobby King but will cost around $20

It’s been about 10 years since I have made anything electrical like this so I’m taking it to my local RC store to hook it up for me due to the price of components I don’t want to make any mistakes. I’m yet to order my electrical components but will keep this post updated on progress I just need the cash...

New board just dropped in my opinion this is the best electric board for transport going around http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqE_2Ev_1ec&feature=player_detai...

That is a wild construction!  At that power rating you might have trouble staying on board!

For roll your own electric transport checkout http://endless-sphere.com/forums/ it is a gold mine of info and lots of people using RC motors, mostly to power bikes.

Don't worry about the 200 Watt limit, it is likely that at any power level an electric skateboard is illegal on roads and footpaths anyway. In for a penny in for a pound!

Endless sphere is how I got onto this beast one of the guys 'beetbocks' was showing off his project (the image above) and he's started selling the machined parts.

With the 200w limit that's what I figured and how would they know unless I'm racing cars up hills :)

i looked at the evolve boards as means of getting around without turning up at a location covered in sweat and needing a shower. The trucks on offer by them is some gullwing sidwinder style double pivot trucks. having ridden that truck before and not rating them, the biggest turn off was the trucks. Ithought evolve hada good product just wish they had standard trucks like the one above.

I would totally buy from hobbyking, 70% cheaper components. ESC's aren't hard to setup either (I raced mini-z's and 1/10 touring for 3 years), you just need the right programming card. The battery will be the hardest bit to get right. but save a penny at hobbyking, this is probably your best bet for an esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__24754__Turnigy_Trackstar...

Hey 'blackwood' Fiik have released a similar product called the 'Rager' it's 400w or 500w and it uses Randal style trucks so could be an option, but due to the price and the componenets you get you would be alot better off waiting for the boosted board IMO.

Ben that ESC looks the goods if I knew what I was doing, there is a guy in oz with a 4kw mountainboard and he has fried a few esc's and he is about to throw one of these in. After this project if it goes well I will be a little bit more adventurous and go down that path... For batteries I'm throwing in two of these http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16227__ZIPPY_Flightmax_8... so the specs on the ESC are 100 Amp, HV 12S, it also has e skate specific firmware so thats another reason why I'm going with it.

Hey Nato- I hope you've received my kit by and an i'm wondering how your getting on with the build? Id love some photo/vid etc for my website. If you need any advise about electrics/batteries etc please speak to Bruno at Alien power systems. I think you will find his ESC are far superior to the one you buy at hobbyking..Check out my new vid and see how much were using it up hill on high power and with no problems

Their a good place for buying the batteries though.

There's a link on my website to his Ebay page and videos and photos etc to help you build the kit up..

all the best .

Almost done, just have to add a kill switch. Have taken it for a spin and it was insane, easily pull 50 km p/h on the flats. A hill close by that I bomb at 45-50 down went 40 up. Some strange faces when cruising so fast on the flats and keeping up with cars... The hour glass bushing on the Holeys suck for stability at speed, but a Caliber mount is in the works at Alien Drive Systems so looking forward to that.

Awesome Nato!  that's some impressive work.

Saw this discussion as I was looking for controllers on google, thought I'd chuck in my two cents.

Bruno from APS is quite good (not affiliated either!). He supplied us with custom motors to our board.

12kw, 4wd. Top speed calculated around 80km/h, but only had the guts to take it up to 50km/h.

This little project started as a hobby, but you know how these things grow out of control lol.
